Re: Poo problem

You can try putting a little Karo Syrup in her bottles.  Pear Juice also seems to work really well.

Re: Poo problem

Jordan, who is only breastfed started the same thing about the same time.  I was worried and asked the doctor - she said that iit is one thing the mommy doesn't control and not to worry.  He didn't seem uncomfortable so I let it go.  Now he is almost 6 months and he usually only goes about once a week but its a big clean up job.  Butterscotch pudding from mid back to thighs.  Good luck in the poo department

Re: Poo problem

The midwife is right in saying it is normal for breastfed babies to poo less often, but if she is uncomfortable then it is not. Try giving her some watered down prune juice (with boiled water), massage her tummy, push her knees into her tummy when she seems uncomfortable too as this helps get it moving. Good luck!

Re: Poo problem

My midwife when i had my daughter suggested putting a tiny bit of soap on your small finger and you place in inside bubs bottom and it somehow stimulates the poo.It has worked for me in the past or wiping and wiping the bottom with a nice warm flannel can do the same.

You could try placing bub against your chest, lift her knees up against you and gentley push them against her tummy it also works to realease any trapped wind because sometimes the after they let out a bit of wind the poo tends to come long after.

Tummy play also can help this i have a 11 month old who always seems to be constipated and coloxyl didnt help me either.A chemist suggested boiling prunes and feeding bub the juice.Hope maybe something here helps.

Re: Poo problem

I know this causes contraversy, but if bub is unhappy I strongly reccommend you try a chiropractor.  They don't "crack" bubs back, but the spine can get compacted from the stress of birth and so they use slight pressure to realign it, get a referral or ask before hand if the chiro is used to working with young babies.

I saw I chiro with my youngest from the age of 10 weeks and I know both those that I saw have kids of their own as well as other kids that they work with lots of kids.  I know of a case recently (I live in a small town) where one of the chiropractors worked on a baby born by c section.  The baby was failing to thrive and was having difficulty breast feeding, generally unsettled.  The chiro found bubs shoulder was causing the trouble and mum reported that bub was a "different baby" after having the treatments.

As far as cost it should cost less than $20 a treatment, sometimes free, and it should only take one or 2 sessions to get constipation sorted.  Careful though you may be shocked when you see how much they poo.

I hope this helps and know that I wouldn't say it if I didn't believe it was safe, it is contriversial, but if it saves bub discomfort, gets you sleep and is hundreds of years it has been practiced, surely it is worth a try.

Best wishes.

Jodi

Re: Poo problem

Breastfed only? Then it's normal. If her poops are soft and pastey it's fine and it's not that  which is making her cry. However, if they are hard and firm and she struggles to get rid of them, that isn't good. I'd be suspicious that she's crying for another reason though. Could she have wind, or reflux, or colic? How well does she burp after a feed?

Re: Poo problem

We had this with our babies too.  Our first was the worst, as while I was breastfeeding, I'd upset her one day (by sneezing) and she decided she wouldn't feed properly after that.  She went 4 weeks without a poo, and we were told it was fine and normal.

We also used paediatric suppositories, that you stick just inside their little bottoms, to help it along too.  This was recommended by our gp and the chemist.  Warning, it can be an instant result and you want to be well prepared.  Picture this, hubby has used the first one, he's wearing a white shirt and completely unprepared for the instant wave of baby poo!  Me, laughing so hard as he coped the lot all over his shirt.  Wasn't laughing trying to get the stains out though! lol.

Re: Poo problem

My son is the same, overnight he went from having 2 poo's a day to only one or two a week and i was worried too, but it's absolutely normal.  Maybe her crying is for another reason...

Re: Poo problem

It is perfectly normal. My son only poops once a week now but when he was first born he did it every day sometimes 2 or 3 times. Are her poos really hard like little rocks? If it's not and its just normal consistancy it isn't constipation.

Re: Poo problem

Can I also add that if it's not constipation it might be something you are eating that is giving her a tummy ache. I would say if coloxyl drops aren't working then it might be a tummy ache or she might just be a whingy baby.

Re: Poo problem

What I used to do is just give a little prune juice.  You can try giving it through the eye dropper like you did with th Coloxyl drops.  It wont hurt her.  Sunrasysia make small bottles of prune juice or you can buy some prunes and soak them in hot water and get the juice that way (not as effective tho).

Try rubbing her tummy in a clockwise motion or lifting her legs to her chest repeatly.  There is heaps of Minti advice on constipation just put consitpation in the above minti search box and see what you find (top right hand corner)

Good luck
