Pregnancy and IBS

Hi,

I was just wondering if there were anyone else out there that suffers from Irritable Bowel Syndrome and if so how did you cope during pregnancy? I suffer from loose bowel movements all the time but since falling pregnant it appears to have gotten worse. Any idea's or tips on how to cope would be much appreciated.

Re: Pregnancy and IBS

I was told to avoid many things that can irritate my IBS.  Anything carbonated, caffine, spicy foods, or fatty foods (especialy fried foods) can all make it worse.  Something that has really helped me is to eat popcorn, and lots of it.  Since is fiber it helps to sooth the intestines, while keeping everything moving smoothly.  I also love to drink lots of lemonade.  For some reason it helps me alot and make my stomach feel better when I've eaten something that does not agree with me.  But the one thing is fiber, try to eat lots of apples, popcorn, or corn in general, fiber tablets, or anything of the such.  But becareful as a sudden increase in fiber will give you a bloated gassy feeling for a few days.  I would take a week or two to ease into the increased fiber, and keep it up after you have the baby as well as it will help in the long run.  Good luck!

Re: Pregnancy and IBS

Hi there,

I have IBS and im 38weeks pregnant. I never suffered from loose bowel movements even before i was pregnant, i just got alot of crampiness and alot of bloating..My ibs has seemed to have cleared since being pregnant where as alot of peoples symptoms worsen unfortunatley.

While having ibs during pregnancy you are alot more likely to become anaemic, this didnt happen with me but to reduce the chance eat a range of foods with high iron. I know that eating more fibre reduces the symptoms of constipation so maybe ease up on the fibre intake and that may reduce the loose bowel movements.

I think the best thing for you to do would talk to your midwife or your doctor. They will be able to give you alot more helpful information on how to control this and help your pregnancy be more enjoyable.
