Re: How Much Is To Much

Hi my little girl is 5 months old and she has only just started sleeping through the night and I have tried the self settling with somenights letting her cry herself to sleep but it has paid off in the long run and beleive me I hated doing it. My little girl is on the 75 percentile for weight and height and she is still being breastfeed but she has a fbreastfeed at about 7.00am and then back to bed until about 9.00am then she has a breastfeed and then eats about the  equiverlant to a small jar of breafast.  The she goes back down until lunch time and has a feed and then lunch 15 minutes later of a jar of fruit like banana/apple/avocado or custard then she goes back down around 2.00 and sleeps until 4.30 then she has a feed and then dinner about 5.00 which is potatoe/sweet potatoe/pumpkin - she seems to have a big tea and then goes down for the night at 7.00pm but will sleep for 45 minutes and then wake and then most of the time I have to settle her for the next hour which really annoys me but this just seems to be her but then I dont normally hear from her until between 4.30am and 8.00am.  She does not cry during the day when I put her down and if she wakes she always settles herself but that last feed a night is horrible and frustrating and no has any suggestions or has had their baby do this before. The infant welfare told me that she should be still having 5 breastfeeds a day.Cheers and good luck.

Re: How Much Is To Much

like what most are saying to this quiestion, i think ur baby needs more milk. He should be having more bottles of milk a day as that is their main sorce of food at this age. I too would be cutting back on the food and giving more bottles to him. He should be having around 5 bottles atthis age, i do know some babies still have bottles at 5 mths old...so maybe u should give that a go and see how he settles then....good luck

He may still be hungry due to not enough formula, but this is for if he still wakes up in the middle of the night if you increase his formula.

With my little boy i got him sleeping thru the night by using tough love, much to contrary belief this does not hurt them, you give them a bottle put them to bed say bout 5 or 6pm get them up bout 10 or 11pm give them an extra bottle then leave them to cry til bout 4 or 5 am. The 2nd nigh do the same this time they do the same but they settle after a time the 3rd nigh you will notice that they won't cry and will sleeep til about 6am if you are lucky therefore you all get a goodnight sleep.

At this age, breastmilk or formula should still be his primary food source.  I think he might be hungry still because he isn't getting enough of the formula.  A hungry baby is going to wake in the middle of the night as he wants to get rid of that hunger.

I would cut back on the solid foods and increase the number of bottles as well as the amount per bottle.  A rapid growth period is also occurring around this age, so he will have an increased appetite because of that.

Re: How Much Is To Much

Let me tell you about my son. :-)  My son was born big, 9 lbs 14 oz. And from then on, he kept it up pretty well. He is now 3 years old and weighs 40 lbs, and is 39 inches tall. He's a pretty sturdy kid, as you can imagine.  He has always been in the 90th percentile for height and weight. Of course that flactuated, but he has never gone below 75th.  As a newborn, he was wearing 3 month old clothes, and at 12 months, he was wearing 18 month old clothes. Right now he wears 5T shirts... actually, we're now on youth size clothes.

Is your baby crawling yet? When babies become mobile, they slow down on their growth and after 12 months, they slow down considerably. I remember my son only gaining 1 lb between his 9 months & 12 months check up.  Babies will eat when they're hungry.

Re: How Much Is To Much

He could still be hungry.  He may not be getting enough milk.  He should be getting about 32 oz at this age, give or take.  But he is certainly getting more then enough of food.  The thing is that the formula/BM has many more calories then the food.  So he could be just that, wanting more food.  Also with the waking up at night, that could just be habit and that may be something you need to work on with him and self settleing at night.  I'm a bit confused with the am feeding, is it a bottle or food?  I would try to up the bottles to maybe 8 oz and see if that helps him at night.  I remember my girl would have 4 8oz bottles and 3 jars of food a day.  Hope this helps...
