Blow that nose!!

OK my daughter has like the worst allergies, and on top of that a cold.  She is very stuffy in the nose, but always sucks the buggies in.  How can I get her to blow her nose?  How can I teach that to her?  She is 3, but still does not know how to do it, and I don't know how I can teach her.  Her cousin is the same age and has been able to do it for several months now.  Help, please as she suffers from chronic sinus infections from all the congestion and not blowing the gunk out.

Re: Blow that nose!!

do the actions and keep persisting, it seems so easy for us to learn to blow, but its a huge step for a child, meanwhile, the chemist has a thing u can use to suck them out of her nose. you just put it in the nostril and pump the suction cup at the end ask your local chemist they will know what I mean, you can also get FESS its a salt water nose spray all safe and good to help clear congestion .. hope this helps :)

Re: Blow that nose!!

I have the bulb for to suck the gunk out, but she hates it!  She won't let me come near her with it, lol.  So for now it's just taking tissue and twising it a bit to be able to get some buggies out.  But we're still working on it, lol

Re: Blow that nose!!

I honestly never learned to blow my nose either. I also have to hold my nose under water.

I think learn by example would be best. I would say let it be because I'm not really affected by it, but since she gets sinus infections...

Re: Blow that nose!!

We taught our girls from a very young age how to blow their noses, our 1 year old is funny! lol.

The way we did it was to hold the tissue over their nose, say blow, and then scrunch up our face and pretend to blow.  They caught on pretty quickly too.

With most of our children's learning, it is something that can be learned by example, so if she sees you blowing your nose, then she will soon pick it up.

Re: Blow that nose!!

I blow my nose all the time, so I'm stumped as to why she has not learned it yet.  I've done the holding the mouth shut and it still manages to come out of her mouth!  I have done the holding her hand up to my nose to feel it and shown her that my mouth is closed, but still nothing.  And she really needs to blow her nose, poor baby....Well guess I'm back to trying again, lol

Re: Blow that nose!!

Get her to practice blowing with her mouth, then teach her the same concept with her mouth closed, the air will come out her mouth.  Put something light on the floor or a table that she can blow and move with her mouth, then show her that you can do it with your nose.

Also blowing bubbles in the water with her mouth, then get her to close her mouth and try to blow with her nose... Though if she sucks up the water, she may get a bit narky ; )

Re: Blow that nose!!

She's great at blowing bubbles in the water...And when she tries to blow thru her nose, it still manages to come out of her mouth, lol...but I will try the idea with the tissue, maybe that will make sense to her.  And sometimes when I tell her to blow her nose, she does a big inhale, sucking it all up, yuk...

Re: Blow that nose!!

I taught my son to blow his nose a few months before he turned 3 years old. I just asked him to copy me. I blew some air out of my nose with my mouth closed. I then got his hand and put it right in front of my face to let him feel the puff of air coming out. Instantly he copied it and I said he was blowing his nose. After that when he was stuffed up, he did pretty good. A few times I had to remind him how to do it.
