Introducing cows milk

My son is 11 months old. I have already started introducing cows milk to him in his cereal and porridge. But i was wondering, how and when do i start introducing him to cows milk in a bottle.

Should i add formula to it at first? Or do i just give it to him straight? Will i need to get the toddler formula???

I am not planning on doing this for a few weeks, but i just want an idea of what i will be doing. (and how much more formula i should buy) I really have no idea.

Re: Introducing cows milk

do it! lol.  He's used to having cows milk on his cereal, so why not let him have it in his  bottle.  You could try slowly introducing it with formula if you feel he might not like it, and then gradually cut the formula out.

As for the toddler formula, none of our girls have liked it.

If his digestive system is functioning well with the cows milk with food.  Cows milk in a bottle should not be a problem.

Re: Introducing cows milk

Hey Cass, I started Anthony on 3/4 formula to 1/4 cows milk for 1 week then to 1/2 and 1/2 for another week and then to 1/4 formula to 3/4 milk for another week then on to full cream milk. (mmmmmm) Anthony loved it and although had loose bowels for 1-2 days he settled down after that and we didn't have any problems. If Austin has a sensitive tummy maybe do it over a longer period and maybe hold off a little but longer but if not it shouldn't be a problem to start him on cows milk shortly. And depending on how much milk he is  having a day it can become a bit expensive. We went from 1lt every 2-3 days to 2lt+ a day. (Anthony loves his milk).

Good luck.

love Karen. xx.

Re: Introducing cows milk

The best way to do it is to mix it with the formula & slowly increase the cows milk every few days & decrease the formula. I was told when my oldest refused the breast that as he ate cheese & yogurt & had cows milk in his cereal & vegies that I could have him on cows milk at 11 months - but 12 months is the recommended age. Just take it slow as it can make them a little pooey and spewy. Good luck!

Re: Introducing cows milk

Hi, Well I am no speacialist but my mum always said to me that you just start with 1 bottle of cows milk per day for the first week and slowly introduce more as the weeks go by, But also you know your baby and only you can tell if he or she needs/likes/wants more of the formula or the cows milk.  Maybe talk to someone at the chemist or a doctor or someone at Child and Youth Health Centre...I know that's not much infomation but I hope this helps.  Let me know how you get on???

Re: Introducing cows milk

Hey Cass,

I wrote a similar Q about a month or so ago LOL click here to have a look.

Sometimes I give a small amount in H's sippy cup and he drinks it alright.  We bought the S26 gold formula for 1 year olds.  Be carful when making it up as H was already on formula we just thought we made it up the same and he wasn't getting enough as we were mixing it wrong.  Lesson learnt:  Always read the instructions!  LOL

When buying formula, I think there, is only one size, just a tin.  You can get ready made up formula in prima packs but they are only about 200mls, I would buy the tin if using formula.

You can mix milk and formula to introduce him that way. Make up a small amount of formula and then add the milk,  Or I suppose as I have done just put a bit in the sippy cup and see how he goes.

Good luck with it all.
