How many bottles?

We went to the see the health nuse yesterday for H's 1year check up.  He did fairly well  .  We didn't see our usual nuse   as I had to change the appt time I already had (made 4mths ago) due to sleeping times, my nurse job shares, and dosen't work the only day I could book.

Anyway this nurse asked how many bottles H was having  I said 3.  She said no no no he should be only having 2 and you should be cutting down.   I said we have already given 1 up and he is not having that much any way never been a good drinker.  Never had the required amout it says on the tin. He never really got past 150mls

One bottle at 7am brekky at 8.30 then lunch about 11.30- 12 (childcare does this so we followed) then bottle at about 2 - 2.30 then arvo tea about 4ish dinner 5.30-6pm bottle at about 7.15pm.    Is this too much??

Anyway how many bottles should I be giving he gererally eats or has bottle every 2-3hrs.   What do/did you do?  Should I ring my usual nurse and ask?  I kinda feel a bit silly really

Sorry it is so long and thanks for your response.

Re: How many bottles?

Thank you everyone for your response...  It has made me feel a hell of a lot better. I am no longer stressing that he is having too much.   I will keep doing what I am doing and wait for H to tell me when he dosen't wont the bottles.  I may tho start slowing making of of the bottles in to cows milk.

Cheers

Re: How many bottles?

Our 1 year old has 3 bottles a day still. Breakfast, lunch and bedtime.  No harm in it, and she is getting her 3 serves of calcium everyday.

I think that nurse needs to pull her head in.  Unless, she is trying to encourage using a cup instead, but she should have stated that.

I'd like to point out that my oldest 3 children (no, not still on bottles!) have milk morning and bedtime as their drinks, and juice during for lunch, so I don't see what the difference is.

Re: How many bottles?

some kids dont like food as much as another.

My kids at 1 were still having 4 a day and another at night if they woke up. 1 for breakie, 1 at lunch, 1 at 3 and 1 at bed time sometimes with tea as well.

you know what your child wants.

Oh and BTW my kids are now 4 and 6 and if i let them they would still have 3 cups of milk a day.

Re: How many bottles?

you are doing just fine, H will let you know when enough is enough. As he is eating through the day as well there is no need to be cutting his bottles back. My daughter is almost 2 and she is still having four bottles a day at 260ml each and she is eating heaps of food as well......They will let you know what they want and as long as they are eating a balanced diet then there is no reason to try and change.

Re: How many bottles?

Keep it up. My H is almost two and from my nurse and also nutritional advice I've read he still has 3 milk drinks a day. . I usually give a sippy cup with 150ml app milk for morning tea, afternoon tea then in the bottle after dinner- and lately he has been asking for milk in the morning though he never drinks it ( so I think this is the my eyes too big for my stomach syndrome) Full fat milk is essential until 5 yrs of age.

As they get older and eat/drink other foods that provide the same nutriants their need for milk can decrease but the is no rush at all.

Re: How many bottles?

Don't listen to the nurse...kids know what they need or want & if he is happy with 3 bottles a day let him go - he will be refusing to drink milk at all before you know it (a phase they all seem to go through). He will cut himself down when he doesn't need it anymore. The only thing you could maybe do is try giving him a cup sometimes and maybe cows milk (if you are still using formula) - but neither of those is a big deal really either.

Re: How many bottles?

Hi Angie

I know Austin is younger than H but He still has 3 bottles a day too (about the same times as H too), sometimes 4. I just go by what i think he wants. Austin has cut down his bottles by himself. I found that once he was having regular meals and snacks thru the day, he has been needing a bottle less and less. I give him Juice with his lunch and water with other meals.

I think that if H is happy and you are happy, then do what you think is right. While the text books may say that they only need 2 bottles a day, every baby is different. You will know when he is ready to cut another one out.

Sorry i cant help you out more. Cass xoxox
