decreased movement

Hi,

Well i know when you get towards the end of your pregnancy that the baby doesnt move as often. Im 38+5 and today have hardly felt the baby move. He has made little niggles but nothing like he use too. I have pain in my back and on the sides of stomach but thats it.

How often should i feel him move to know that everything is ok? Is it bad he isnt moving often or could it mean he has slowed down to perhaps make his grand entrance??

Dannii xxo

Re: decreased movement

The recommendation is that you should feel 10 good movements in about 6 hours.  That is really feel them, they should be arms and legs or the head moving.

As you get further along in a pregnancy, the movements do decrease, due to lack of room.  However, bubs will still try and stretch their way out on a regular basis.

A good way to encourage movement in your baby is to eat ice cubes.  This is super cold and with the stomach being so close to the uterus, bubs can feel the temperature change, something they don't like.  Combine that with sweet cordial (not juice, it has to be glucose not fructose which is the sugar in fruit) and you might find that for the next little while, you have a super hyperactive baby.

In the days before bubs arrives, you will find that bubs will move alot, then rest.  There will become a definite pattern to it.  You will also notice that you will have days of energy and days when getting out of bed is a chore.  Same pattern, and between you and bubs, everything is almost ready.

Any time you are concerned about the lack of movement with your baby, please just go to the hospital and ask to be put on the monitor for a while.  This will measure bubs heartrate, movements and any contraction action that could be going on.  If bubs doesn't move after about an hour, they will bring you the ice and cordial in an effort to get some rib tickling action.  This is how I know about causing a stir! lol.

Re: decreased movement

I think you should go in and be checked by the doctor.  I used to feel so bad when I went in and found out it was nothing but my doctor told me that he would rather have 100 visits of nothing wrong than to have that 1 that didn't visit and it was needed.

Due days are just estimates and sometimes the baby will come a bit early or come a bit late.  Your fluid levels also start to become a concern the closer you get to the due date and are very very important the longer you go past the due date.  You could be in the beginning stages of labour, who knows?  As to how often you should be feeling the baby move?...Everyone is different and really no two births are the same.  Movement does slow down the closer you get to the big day.

Listen to your feelings.  You know what would be best and whatever you decide, just remember that you are not wasting the doctors time.

So my opinion is to call your doctor now and let him or her know what is happening and go from there.

Re: decreased movement

 Hey Dannii,

If you are concerned about the lack of movement, don't hesitate to get it checked out. They can monitor him to make sure all is ok. The movements won't be as big now with a lot less room but you should still be able to feel him move several times a day.

Re: decreased movement

Hi Dannii

I was told that it is normal towards the end of your pregnancy not to feel bub move as much. It is a very tight space in there now. As long as you are still feeling him move a couple of times a day, then everything is alright.

Again, if you think something is wrong - go straight into the hospital. They can hook to you to a machine that will measure his heartrate and also any movement you are having. This machine also measures contractions.

Good luck hunni
