Watery diarrhea in 15 month old

My daughter has had watery diarrhea for 2 days.. She has a decreased appetite but is still eating. I have had her on the BRAT diet consistently for 1 1/2 days. No fever and seems pretty happy. Until the last three hours she has been super gassy, fussy and has had 5 watery stools. It is the weekend and so my only option is to go to the emergency room. I know this is a big scare with infants but what about toddlers? What should I do?

I also have no idea what the BRAT diet is!

I think that you should get your little one to medical help straight away. This is definately a stomach bug, not teething, as teething may cause slightly loose stools but not as in your childs case where they are watery and often.

Little ones can become dehydrated very quickly!!!!!!! Within a couple of hours, and this places a huge pressure on the childs internal organs.

Please get help! Cheers, Miriam

Hello, So far she is doing much better!! It always seems to work itself out right after I panic, funny how that works! Thanks for all the great advice everyone!! I will surely take her to the doc if she is not getting better. Tonight we had a pasty poo so I feel like the BRAT diet is starting to pull thing together.

So what is the BRAT diet? It includes:

  • Bananas
  • Rice
  • Applesauce
  • Toast

What we normally give just didnt realise it had a name! Well Done!

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the BRAT diet?

With any 'diet', it is to be expected that the digestive system is going to require a period of adjustment and diarrhea can be one of the side effects.

Given the age of your child, I would also say that she is teething, like our 14 month old, and this too can cause stomach upsets.  When teething, babies salivate more and they swallow it.  This can cause stomach upset due to the ph levels of the saliva, which become more acidic when teething for some reason.

You say there is no fever with it, so I wouldn't be rushing to the emergency room just yet.  Keep her fluids up and give bland foods and if there is no improvement by say Tuesday, then take her to see the doctor.

Re: Watery diarrhea in 15 month old

Hi there, sorry to hear of your dilemma.

It could possibly be that she is teething.  Have you noticed any new teeth coming in, specifically in the back molar area.  Another possibility could be that she got cold.  If it is warm or hot where you live and you are having to run the air conditioners or fans, her stomach may have gotten too cold and this can trigger a little bout of diarrhea.  It can even happen to us adults.  Also, if she walks and is walking on cold floors, this can trigger it too.  I am not sure of how your house is so I just listed up some possibilities.  I never had believed this when my mother in law told me and unfortunately I found out the hard way

Is she taking in enough fluid to replace what she is losing?  It's very important to not let her become dehydrated since she is so very little.  If it was me, after 2 days, I would take her in to see the doc just to be on the safe side as little ones can dehydrate rather quickly.  Again, please note the advice up at the top and see if it helps you a bit.  there are these little belly wraps you can get for your child and I will try to find some shops online and email them to you.

Air conditioning is nice but can cause some really unfavorable bowel results if it gets too cold in the house.  Hope this helps you out a bit and lets me know how she comes out.  Take care.

aaliyah xoxo
