Printer rationing?

I'm setting up a printer for my 4 year old today - he's very excited. Any ideas on how to ration him though. Paper's cheap. Ink isn't.

Re: Printer rationing?

I agree with the daily limit of paper, also show him how to save his documents so he can print them another day if he has reached his limit,

Re: Printer rationing?

This isn't an immediate solution, but you might want to watch ebay or local office sales for a used laser printer.  I picked a five year old model up for my mom to use from my office, once, when they were upgrading at got it for really cheap.

It seems like a huge expense at first, but when you realize, over the long run, how much cheaper it is to buy toner than inkjet ink, it makes sense.

Re: Printer rationing?

I would put a certain number of sheets of paper a day in his printer ( your discretion)..Once he's printed up that many sheets, he has finished printing for the day..This should allow the ink to last a bit longer..Then the next day give him the same amount of sheets again..This will also teach him to pick and choose what he prints because he will be used to having a certain amount of sheets of paper daily!!

Good luck and I hope he has fun!

Re: Printer rationing?

We've started off with 4 pages a day for Archie (who's 4) and 3 sheets a day for Oscar (who's 3). That seemed to satisfy them yesterday - and they were bth drawn to printing B&W to colour in later which is fine by me as I thought they'd want to do full colour prints...maybe they just haven't thought of that yet!

Maybe you can just set it to black and white and the economical setting. That way it wont be using much ink and it is only b&w. I like the idea about putting paper in the printer and once it is gone, that is all for the day.

Make sure that the default setting is for economy or draft print. The other option is that it doesn't automatically print, so that you can see what is about to be printed.
