Post c-section bleeding

Does anyone out there know how long the bleeding lasts for after a caesarian section?  Im now on my third week!  And when can I expect a period? (so I can start the pill again!) Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Post c-section bleeding

My bleeding lasted about 6 weeks but was really light for about the last three. I started the mini-pill I still had some bleeding for a few weeks. My son was born at the end of Feb. and I just got my regular period back in June. My doctor told me that I didn't need to worry about starting the pill during my period because the only reason they recommend that is to make sure you aren't pregnant. You can start the pill anytime now, because you definitely are not pregnant. I started in the middle of April and didn't have a period until June.

Re: Post c-section bleeding

My bleeding I believe was 4-5 weeks..UGH>>>

I know that everyone is deifferent though. After that it was three months before I got my period again and when I did, let's just say it was heavy..

Re: Post c-section bleeding

Both my chidren were C -Section deliveries and although it's too long ago for me to remember  exactly how long it was , I do remember it went for several weeks.  It was different for both children though.  Don't worry, your experience sounds quite normal.

Re: Post c-section bleeding

I had heard that bleeding after c-section was very minimal so it gave me something to look forward to as my scheduled c-section date got closer. Well, I bleed for about 6-7 weeks! When I asked my doctor, who is my uncle-in-law, he told me everyone is different. I felt like I was making up for the 9 months with no period. : )

Sincerely,

Love

PS Congrats on the new baby!

Re: Post c-section bleeding

I've never had a c-section myself, but I have heard that you can bleed for just as long as a natural birth, perhaps even longer.

Are you breastfeeding?  If not, then you might bleed longer.  Breastfeeding helps to get everything back to normal and help expel the blood quicker.

I've just realised you said 3 weeks, not months!  Wow, I wish!!!! I bleed for around 3 months with mine, and they have all been natural!!!!

Re: Post c-section bleeding

My first one I bled for about 3-4 weeks, but I was in hard labor when I had it, the second one I bled for a little less than 2 weeks when i was not in labor at all, I don't know if that makes a difference but everyone is different too, they say it can be anywhere from 1-6 weeks.  Because I know a lot of the time after your bleeding for a week or two or three then you might get your period and not know it, so that could make it long too.  So it really just depends I would give it another week and see what happens and if it doesn't stop I would just call your OB/GYN office and let them know and they will have the nurse call you or your doctor call you or something. Hope this helps!

Re: Post c-section bleeding

I bled for around 2 weeks with both mine...pretty light after the first 7 days. You don't need to wait until you get a period to start the pill ether...I went on the mini pill with my first when he was 6 weeks & I was breast feeding & didn't have a period until he was 9 months. With the second I got a Mirena put in when he was 4 months old.

Re: Post c-section bleeding

Women who have had c-section experience the same post partum bleeding like those of women who had babies vaginally. Expect bleeding anywhere from 3-8 weeks. I myself had some bleeding for up to 9 or 10 weeks with my first c-section.

As far as getting your period back, this will depend if you're breastfeeding. If you are, you may not get it for a very long time (I'm going on a year). If you're not breastfeeding, it may take you anywhere from 3 months on to get it back. But as far as pills, you don't necessarily need to wait for your period to get back in order to start it. Just consult with your doctor. My OBGYN gave me pills right away (mini pill - since I am breastfeeding).
