How do I......?

Me again. Just wondering, how do/did you guys teach your children to spit when cleaning their teeth? I have a toothpaste that has no floride in it, so it doesn't harm Aaliyah if she swallows it, but I am trying to teach her to spit the toothpaste and water out when she rinses - except that she mostly wants to swallow it! lol! At the moment I stand next to her and clean her teeth for her, then ask her to spit (showing her by doing it myself) and have a little cup with water in it to use to rinse with, which I also ask  her to spit out (with demonstration). I then rinse out her toothbrush and allow her to practice with it while she watches me brush my teeth properly.

However, mostly when I ask her to spit she swallows it lol - and if she does spit it's after she's swallowed it lol! Do I just keep perserving in the knowledge that she'll eventually get the idea (she's 2yrs old), or is there any other methods that have been useful for you?

Cheers,

Pia.

Re: How do I......?

The way I do it with my 3 yr old is while brushing his teeth i tell him we have to get all the buggies out (that way he keeps his mouth open to brush) then when it is time to rinse i tell him ok we have to spit the buggies out. He thinks it's fun and even opens his mouth at the end and ask's are they out!

Re: How do I......?

I'm a registered dental assistant of 18+ yrs and married to a dentist. Don't worry at this age about rinsing a spitting. It takes a year or two more before most children get the hang of that. Make sure you are brushing her teeth before or after she does as a 2 yr old can't do a good enough job. Also, now is the time to start getting her used to flossing. I use the little flossers on a handle for my 3 yr old daughter. Message me if you have any dental questions. : )

Re: How do I......?

Babies and toddlers don't really need to spit... Presuming you are using an age appropriate toothpaste, they only require a tiny smear of it, and no rinsing.  It is better to leave the fluoride on their teeth to continue working.  Some dentists are even recommending the same for adults.

Don't worry she'll get it. My 3 1/2 year old only just got it and he's been brushing his teeth with his older brother for a while now.

Re: How do I......?

Personally i think you are doing everything right....my son did the same, but with time and when he felt comfortable  with spitting, he did. So i wouldn't be to concerned, I'm certain your daughter will catch on soon.

Cheers Janice

Re: How do I......?

They way I did it with both my boys was got a stool so they could reach the sink, a special cup just for that purpose & stood them there brushing their teeth while I brush mine. Then I rinse & spit & finish brushing their teeth & let them have the cup. For a start they just swallow but my oldest was spitting by 16 months and my youngest is almost 18 months and just started spitting in the last week. Persist and she will get it eventually.
