Is it a miscarriage

I am 14 weeks and 2 days pregnant.  Last night at 9.30pm I began to bleed the equivalent to the beginning of a regular period a pinky red in colour (guys excuse the details) I have had mild cramping throughout the night that are really almost not there when I'm laying down.  The bleeding too slows on laying down.  I live in a rural town and when I saw my doctor at 6 weeks he said he" would see me again in 10 weeks as the only that would happen in the mean time  would be a miscarriage and theres nothing he can do about that" .  I was alone with 2.5 yr old when this occurred hubby having only returned this morning and so I rang the hospital and they put me onto a midwife who said it sounded like a miscarriage, they couldn't do anything to prevent one at 14 weeks, and they advised me to lay down and take panadine if the cramps got too bad.  I was welcome to come in if I wanted to but there was nothing they could do for me.  As it's over 12 hours, in which I have been laying down for the most part except for the frequent loo usage and it hasn't really got any heavier and the cramps only mildly so (I've not had to take anything at all)  I'm wondering if against medical opinion it might be just a weird bleed and everything might be okay?  I know some people spot and this is definitely a light flow but could this be just one of those things? Has anyone else experienced this and still birthed a healthy baby 6 months later?  Fingers crossed.

Re: Is it a miscarriage

Than You everyone for your well wishes, advice and support I truely appreciate it.  Yesterday mid morning I passed a large-ish clot and the blood has gone from pink red to ruty and now old blood brown and this morning it is much much less in amount than it has been though still there, but only really on wiping, there is no pad marks any more if thats not too graphic.

Yesterday The update is that, I went to the E.R. (or E.D. they call it here) and after a bit of a wait a nice midwife explained that a featal heart monitor would not be able to give a definative result at 14 weeks, it might find a heart beat and it might not and the might not might not be because there is not one there.  They couldn't give me an ultra sound without a Drs. authorization so I then went and waited at the Drs.  their phone lines are down so I couldn't ring them and neither could the hospital.  What a run around.  When I was pregnant with our daughter and had an implantation bleed at 6 weeks and went to the kal hospital in a panic they ultra-sounded me then and there to find out what was going on and that bleed was really nothing in comparrison to this, there is simply only one ultra sound guy here it appears, and yesterday he apparently had the afternoon off.  How ridiculous is that, the local Govt needs to rectify this shortage and when all this is over I'll be writing a lot of angry letters to everyone as I can't be the only person who has had to run from pillar to post whilst being upset etc.

The upside is that the Dr I saw last time wasn't on and the Dr I did see was heaps nicer and kinder and so I switched to him, he called it a "Threatened miscarriage"which isn't a real miscarriage, but might be a warning or might end up as one after all.  Also he got me to give a urine sample incase all this has been brought on by a urinary tract infection, as since I discovered blood I have been peeing more frequently though no burning or anything, I thought it was worry wee.    So this morning at 10 am W.A. time I will hopefully be having an ultra sound which will tell us once and for all if the pregnancy is still viable.  Actually I am S!%%ing myself incase it's not, which is weird because normally I am all for knowing the truth regardless of the good or the bad of it, but this time, I'm almost leaning towards ignorance being bliss...ALMOST.  I'll let you know how I go.  Thanks again for all the advie and support....Fingers Crossed.

Firstly, I just want to say, the more you stress, the worse it will be.  Try to relax and be calm about what is happening.

I would also be going into the hospital to get checked out.  They can do an ultrasound and see if everything is ok or if you are having a miscarriage.

Not a lot can be done to stop a miscarriage, so sorry about that, but it could be a bleed of some sort, which is apparently rather common in pregnancy.

If you have had sex recently,it is possible that hubby's sperm has caused an irritation (your plug may not be fully developed yet) and the bleed could be from that.

It is better to get checked out to put your mind at ease and to ensure that things don't get worse for you.  Being in a rural town, help isn't always close at hand, so sooner rather than later is a good idea.

Oh Chele, you must be so worried you poor thing.  It could be either, and the best thing you can do is rest to give bubs a chance.  I will send you an email about what happened to me and hopefully it will help - it will at least pass some time and give you another outlook.

Luv Lui.

Re: Is it a miscarriage

My thoughts are with you Chele!  I had bleeding with Harrison at about 6-7 weeks.  That was very dark brown old looking blood.  Had US next day and all was fine...

I would try to take it as easy as possible and see if the bleeding slows or stops.  If it continues, you need to see how you feel about being at home if you do in fact miscarry.  I don't know what you might find but you may find more comfort being at the hospital.

Gosh I do hope this is just one of those freak things!   Best of luck to you.

Re: Is it a miscarriage

Oh Chelle sorry to hear that you are bleeding. I hope it is just inbetween bleeding that can happen. My Aunty (sorry not a great example) had her period up until 20 weeks. she thought she was 6 weeks had a ultra sound and found out she was having a boy. (Mayo is now almost 3) she did have a lot of probs and ended up in KEMH (King Edward) but with their help she carried to 40 weeks and delivered a healthy and very happy boy. This runs in my family having your period till 20 weeks.

Personally I would go to Esperance Hospital and demand a ultra sound and for them to hear if bubs heart is still beating.

I am appaled by what they have said to you. When I had unexplained bleeding I was told to go straight to my nearest hospital or get into the after hours clinic.

If you can get into see your GP, I am sure they will add a spot as it is kinda a emergancy.

Good luck Chele and will be thinking of you.
