my daughter was only born with one kidney

she is a year old now but was only born with one kidney. i have been assured by doctors that she can lead a normal life as the one she has is bigger than normal and makes up for the one missing but i was just wondering if there were any parents here that have a child that was born with only one kidney if they have experienced any difficulties?

Re: my daughter was only born with one kidney

Hi there, My Mum was born with only one kidney. She didn't know this until she was 18 and had and appendectomy!! She is now 64 and has never had any problems! As long as your child is free of kidney disease ( easy to annually check with a wee / blood test  just to be on safe side!) there should be no problems!

Ok, organ questions!  Yeah, I've done a bit of research on this in the past, as I am an organ donor (once I'm gone peoples, so no lining up just yet! lol).  Your daughter is in a fortunate position as her body is already used to only functioning with one kidney.

You say it is larger than normal, which says to me that the kidney cells didn't divide properly when they were developing, which means, an over sized single kidney.

Only about 40% of our kidneys is actually needed for a healthy lifestyle, so for her, there should be very little issues with it.  Obviously, it might not last forever, and she may require a transplant when heading for middle age, but if she grows up looking after it, then maybe not even then.

I doubt she will have any difficulties with her one kidney, because she was born that way.  Her body is already used it.

I  kno wsomeone who has 1 kidney because he got that one from a transplant. He is perfectly fine. Except for of course taking his anti rejection medications every day.

Just wanted to clarfy that he did not nteed the kidney because he was born with one, he had medical issues with hte 2 kidneys he was born with.

plenty of people live a long and healthy life with only one kidney, people wouldn't be able to donate kidney's if they couldn't, so i wouldn't be worrying too much, just be careful with any activity that could damage the one she has.

I personally haven't but a once friend (kids in primary school together) did have this with her son. There were no problems, except that she wouldn't let him play football as it was too rough IHO. We used to discuss it as my son has his own kidney issues.
