Sick kid

Hi have 9 yr old girl woke this morning with fever headache and cold. Panadol helped. But felt worse this evening she had a panadol but before it could work properly she went to sleep and woke about 45 mins later to start crying and say she felt sick when I went to comfort her and she started saying things that didn't make sense acting like  I wasn't there (or she wasn''t with me)I think she was having bits of feverish dreams  and woke confused . She had a bath and calmed down alot now but just wondering if someone could tell me if they think it probally just flu or maybe deserves a check up? she is not so bad that  feel the need to run up to emergency at night with her to see a doctor.

Re: Sick kid

Hi my 8 year old has hallucinations when he gets a fever.  It is really freaky.  Lotss of reassurance and stay calm.  Keep the panadol up and cool the child down slowly.  See a doctor tomorrow.

Re: Sick kid

Just keep an eye on her.  The first 24-48 hours of the symptoms of a cold or flu are usually the worst.  After this point, they tend to lessen and she should be on the mend.

Her waking up like that and acting like you weren't there is probably due to the fact she wasn't awake at all. Our 5 year old often does this, and when we try and comfort her, she starts screaming.  Also, when we ask her about it in the morning, she doesn't remember it at all, which is different to when she has actually been awake and can remind me that I said I would do something and keep forgetting.

Re: Sick kid

i think if anyone has a fever above 40 degrees celcius they should be seeking medical attention. the gibberish was most likely because of the fever.

if she has all 5 of these then she has the flu:

  • High fever, chills and sweating
  • Sore throat
  • Weakness
  • Headache and generalised muscle and joint pains (legs and back)
  • A non-productive cough that can later become more severe and productive.

if she's missing any one of those it's not the flu. i actually had a fever of 39.3, muscle and joint aches and pains, sore throat and weakness, among other things, but because i don't have a cough the doctor said it's not the flu, and i actually work whit this doctor, he's wonderful and knows his stuff. he said i had an infection of some sort and i'm on antibiotics, will see how they go.

fever is normally associated with an infection, so it's best for her to see a doc to get some antibiotics.

Re: Sick kid

Maybe see how she goes tomorrow and if she is no better or she is getting worse then there is no harm in getting her checked out.
