when is a good time to get drivers licenses??

my soon to be 16 year old grand daughter will be 16 in Sept and of course wants her licences.  We live in a little bitty small town and have been letting her drive without them.  All the kids around here drives at 14-15,  Right now she is scared to go any where except where she has permission.  I'm afraid when she gets her licences she will go where ever she wants,,, not where we say.  She has given us some problems last year but for the past 6 mos has been pretty good about everything.  I'd like some comments on what we should do!! Thanks

Re: when is a good time to get drivers licenses??

My little brother is 16 too. He got his licence as soon as he was able to. He has grown up on a farm and has been driving since he was about 14 on the property as well.

Getting your licence is a major part of growing up, it is a 16 year olds first real opportunity for freedom and unfortunately for parents there isnt alot we can do to stop it from happening. But what you can do, is make sure that she is taught to drive safely and responsibly. Make sure she knows all the road rules, teach her how to maintain her car, change a tire, check the oil, water and other fluids. Give her every possible lesson before she gets her full licence. Take her driving in the dark, in the pouring rain, at sunrise and sunset.

All you can really do is prepare her and guide her in the right direction. After that, she is her own person and she makes her own choices.

Re: when is a good time to get drivers licenses??

Ok My son is 17 and got his licence on the dot of his birthday. He has a job though, and his own car. My second son is approaching 16 and still wants to stay studying. Therefore he wont be able to afford his own car. I see what you are saying as while they are learners you are with them and they can't go and do what they like however my rule is my car therefore I am in it if they drive it. Now my son bought his own car he is on his own but he pays the consequences and he has had a speeding fine and a yellow sticker which has taught him he needs to be responsible because I will not help him, it comes from his pay which hurts him. The good thing about it is now he drives himself to work to footy training and even to his dads. I can't control what he does now but I do try the lecture etc. Your grand daughter sounds responsible but as long as she knows the rules especially if it is your car. Personally they don't drive my car without me!

Re: when is a good time to get drivers licenses??

Im thirty i do not have a licence and to tell ya the truth thats for safety reasons...everyone elses hahaha.

I would have to say if she has been driving she must have a good amount of sense and a good grasp of things at this age to do so.But the thing is i know with my 13 yr old she wants her licence so she can get out of here as fast as possible and i dont thnk if you stopped her from getting it  that it would mean she wont take off where she likes because freinds are always good for borrowing their cars hey!

If you have an honest a basic dicussion on the dangers of taking off without your knowledge or give her the right to go nowhere far unless shes asked first...or only on weekends, not to drive with passengers and keep reminding her you love her and you dont want her to be front page news...

goodluck..

About 25 I say!!! Just joking, mine is already 16 and hasn't got his yet. But I am not pushing it. He is quite happy with his push bike. I just don't agree with the 16 bit. I didn't get mine til I was 18. I think it depends on the person. Stipulate the rules she has to abide by and if she breaks them then the priviledges are taken away.

Let her get her license.  Make sure she understands that she will only have access to a car if she sticks to the rules, which you will need to work out.  If she breaks them, then no car!  And be firm about it and don't back away from the decisions you make.

I would also get her to do Advanced Driver Education courses.  They are a lot of fun and give young (and older drivers) a bit of a wake up call of what dangerous driving can really cause.

I was 18. but I held off till I was out of home cause of the abuse i got from my mum.

but if you are allowed at 16 where you are I would let her but if she dont have a job or a car then she has to go by ur rules or she loses the privilage of the car
