Hi All, my almost 2yrs is having grommetts put in on aug 14th i was wondering if anyone else kids have had these?? What are they like after surgery?? Also i have been told that they have to wear ear plugs when in water - i can't see my son leaving that in his ears any suggestions?? and how carefully do u have to be in bath??
In t hink in the US we call these "ear tubes" right...Jedd had these done this past Jan, he was aobut 14 months old at them time. We were given ear drops to use afterwards to hlep them heal. After 2 weeks we were told not to worry about water in his ears and treat him as normal. We haven't had any issues so far.
The procedure itself took all fo 10 mins. They are gassed lightly just enought to make them REAL REAL drowsy. We litterally barely had time to check into the waiting room when out came the Dr. to talk to us.
He had to have an empty beely from midnight the night before and he was allowed to wear his PJ' s into the OR.
the easiest procedure we have had odoen in all 5 of our trips to the OR.
My son at 18 months had grommetts put in. He had only one ear infection before them and since then has had quite a few bouts. You have to be very careful about getting water into their ears. One of the nurses told me you can put cotton wool covered in vaseline in his ears in the bath but they need decent ear plugs for swimming. You can buy some which are mouldable like putty from a good chemist. My son was fine after the surgery he was supposed to be resting and quiet but he was up playing and being quite loud. I think the difference in sound excited him. It is a struggle to get little ones to leave the earplugs in but you can get a swim cap to go over his head and ears so they can't easily pull them out. Good luck and I wish you the best for the surgery.
All in all, I think I was more worried about the surgery than he ever felt. Make an appointment to discuss your concerns with your GP and write down any questions you have so you don't forget when u get there. You can always pop in to a good GP for a chat
my little girl has now had 3 lots of grommetts now she was 18 months old when she had them in the first time her dad and i was a mess and she was fine she did so well after the surgery that she was home just 2 hours after surgery you cant get any water in your sons ears so ears plugs are a must your will soon the happy little boy that you know and love good luck
sadly my hubby's acc isnt working on here so I will have to relay a message from him.
He was 18 months old when he first got grommits. Grommits saved his life as his mum taught him he couldnt out his head in the water, he went swiming by himself at 2 and would of drowned but he stayed on the stair.
He said he only had baths and his mum made sure she didnt get water in his ears. In the end at 3 he had to have his adinoids(sp) out.
He had it so early cause he couldnt hear as a child. the day he had his grommits in his mum knocked a frog that both hubby and I have and it crocked and he freaked out cause up until then it was just a frog. he had never heard the crock before.
i actually had grommets myself as a kid, i had three lots spanning about 10 years i think. i'm pretty sure i was fine after surgery, and it doens't take long at all, less than an hour i think. you do have to be pretty careful with water, cos what the grommets do is make a hole in the eardrum, so getting water in your ears will allow it to get into the middle ear which isn't good, and this leads to nasty glue ear which i had many many many times. it's not fun for kids, lots of ear drops and ear aches. i think my mum resorted to me having blutac to put into my ears to keep the water out, and i had to have the blu tac in for every shower, baths she wasn't so diligent but we weren't allowed to slpash or have my head dunked. not sure how you'll get alround him trying to keep it in there. best way is proabbly a reward chat of some sort.
The reward chart might be the way to go, but i guess with his ears fixed im hoping he'll understand me more. Cause now he has trouble understanding what im saying to him sometimes.. thanks
Hi my son did have that operation but he was 13. It was very scary for me though the nurses and doctors are very good at making you feel a little more easy. They will tell you that it is a very simple operation, they do a lot but any surgery is scary. I had day surgery earlier this year and I can tell you that was scary though they tell you all the things that can go wrong of course for legal reasons probably but all was well with my sons procedure. His little brother got a little scared seeing him coming out of the anesthetic but all went well for him. He stayed in overnight so we went home but when my youngest had an operation at 18 months I stayed in hospital with him overnight. They had heaps for him to do there and he enjoyed his stay actually. Of course he was older so can't help with the ear plug thing though as long as he doesn't put his head in the water at bath time. I would ask the doctor this question too. Hope all goes well!
