hi, i have a 15 week old baby girl and her father has had asthma since he was a young age and is in his family, we are both hopeing that our daughter doesnt end up with it although the last few days shes had a mild cough (not chesty) and a lil weasy if anyone knows how early they can get asthma and how early it can be detected would be greatly appreciated!
There are so many things that can cause a baby to wheeze. Especially in this weather, when all the viruses are going around. It is most likely a repiratory infection, or bronchitis. Having asthma in the family might make her more prone to chest infections and things but they wont diagnose asthma until they are at least 12 months old, sometimes even later.
What she is experiencing might be because of the cooler weather in Australia (checked your profile page). All our kids have had various coughs and colds over the last few months, but once we got the inside temperature regulated and increased humidity, the problem has gone away.
This is one that the docs do like to wait on. Particuarlly since a cold can often cause wheezing in an infant. Mainly cause the little lungs get so irritated that they become inflammed and thus the wheezing sound. It is when they have asthma symptoms that they will look at and diagnose asthma. My daughter is going on 3 and they still have to say she has asthma or not. Espcially since she has allergies, this makes it a bit tougher since they symptoms can often be the same. But it's something that should be watched with your little one. And it takes several episodes of wheezing from colds, running, or just out of nowhere for them to say it is asthma. Like I said, my daughter has un-diagnosed asthma, and it may be that way for awhile. Let your babies doc know about the wheezing, and have to looked at, as wheezing is a sign that she may not be getting enough oxygen as well and may need treatment. Good luck, and just keep her doc informed...
My son also has wheezing issues when he has a cold. The first time I took him to the hospital they told me that they don't diagnose asthma unless he has had three or four major issues with it.
Once he had his tonsils, and adenoids out at 2 years of age, his colds became a lot better and he does not wheeze unless he has a really bad cold. I to have asthma.
I think it really is a case of wait and see at that stage. If you are worried about it though I would sort out a doctors opinion.
I was actually born with breathing problems and im not to sure when i was actually diagnosed with athsma but i was on athsma medication from a very very early age. I still suffer from cronic athsma today but i was told that every 6 years you have a chance to get rid of athsma and mines still not going anywhere. Im not sure if that is true though.
I think its about 2-4 years old as the babies lungs are still developing. I know there are some cases where a bubs say 6 months old can show signs of asthma. My sister did and was blue at 6 months. She still at 21 has cronic asthma.
