why are my infants stools hard as rocks?

My 8 month old daughter has been having a horrible time with pooping for over a month now- every time she starts to push, she screams and cries and even occasionally tears her anus. When I see the stools, they are always hard as rocks. Is there anything I can do to help her?

You need to increase her fibre and water intake.  These will help.  Also, maybe a paedeatric suppository that you stick in her bottom to help soften it all up will help.  They are a laxative, but because they don't work through the stomach, are completely safe for use in young children.

Just make sure if you do use them, have some towels on hand.  It can be an instant result!!!!!  Oh, and white clothes, well, they might not stay that way.  Talking about yours, not bubs!!!!  I've learned the hard way.

Re: why are my infants stools hard as rocks?

This happened to a girlfriend of mine...horrible :(

Prune juice definately helped. I can also recommend pureed carrots-if pooing were an olympic sport my son would win gold for Australia but carrot really ramps up the frequency and...ahem...volume.

My friend also used Coloxl and I know others who have had success with Parachoc- would definately speak with your infant health nurse though as prolonged use of laxatives can lead to ongoing problems. Hope the problem sorts out soon-no fun at all.

Re: why are my infants stools hard as rocks?

My daughter had the same problem, every time she would  go to pass gas or poop she wouldkick her legs, her face would turn red, and she would cry. I spoke to my doctor about it and they told me to mix 1oz of prune juice and 1 oz of water in a bottle and give that to her. That only seem to help for a little while but we did notice a change when we changed her formula to Enfamil for babies with fussiness or gas she seemed to be having more poops and passes gas much better. also there are gas drops you can give her but first talk to your doctor about them.

If it is that bad she needs to see her Doctor to get a stool softener for her age and see why this is happening.  If she is still taking a bottle try mixing a couple teaspoons of light Karo syrup in a bottle of water a couple times a day.

She may need more fluids in her diet like juices or water. That would work wonders for her pooing issue. I hope it gets better.

Sounds like your daughter is constipated.  Try giving her lots of pureed fruit with her cereal in the morning.  Pairs are good.

Try a little bit of prune juice on her cereal.

There is heaps of information on consitpation on Minit just type constipation in the above right hand search box.

She is constipated.  If lots of water is not helping......try one of these.... Either diluted prune juice - 1/2 water and 1/2 juice OR mix about 1 T. of corn syrup in her formula or juice.  I know it's a lot of sugar but it works like a mild laxative.  Apple juice also helps - NOT diluted.  If this continues you may need to take her to the doctor, she could have something else going on.  Good luck!  Hope she feels better soon!

Oh I know how awful that is, that happened to my son too. Everyone visiting found it most amusing at his desperate pooing noise whilst I was crying at his pain. It usually happens with a huge diet change. I had it when changing from breast milk to bottled and changing to solid home cooked food.  Only thing that changed it was time, it was over a month for us too. Try and pump as much water and weetabix into her as you can! Mucho fibre and mucho waterxxxx good luck I hope it ends soon. Contact your health visitor too
