giving up the bottle

Hi

I would like to wean my 13mth old off the bottle.  Currently he is having 3 bottles 2 with full cream milk and his night one with formula.

I would like to try give the day time milk in a sippy cup but he wont take it.  He loves to drink water out of the sippy cup but not milk.  I have tired a sippy cup with a soft teat like spout and gave it like I give the bottle but he wouldn't have a bar of it!

Any suggestions??  Should I leave him on the bottle for longer until he refuses it himself?

Re: giving up the bottle

 hi

i had the same problem with my son, he wouldn't drink milk out of anything but the bottle.  I kept him on bottle till he was around 18 - 19months. When i went for his needles and check up the doctor told me it was time for him to come off. But i was a bit scared cause i new he wouldn't drink the milk any other way, but my son ate 1 serve of yoghurt, cheese and custard most days. So 1 day i got his bottles and with him helping me we placed them in a clean plastic bag and then got my son to put them in the bin (i retrieved them later on of course and clean them) and told him no more bottles, we are big boy now... that was ok but then he didn't drink milk for about a month i tried for a little bit and then just let him have a break and didn't offer it to him. Then one day at shops i was having milk drink and he wanted some - he ended up drinking the whole think but through a straw. so we didn't go back to cows milk straight away i got another tin of formula and he drank it out of a cup with a straw... and eventually he drank the milk straight from cup. So I would wait a little bit longer till he his only having one bottle in day and one at night. before weaning him off.

good luck lisa :)

I let my son try to drink a little from a regular cup... with out the tippy top.   it makes a bit of a mess if you put too much in it but it seemed to work for him!

We found this with our babies too.  They would take water or juice in a cup but not milk.  After much investigation, we found that because milk is thicker than water, it was not as easy for them to get anything and so they gave up.

We found some really good, cheap cups in Coles that we have now been using for about 5 years.  They are called Dinkee and found in the drink bottle and lunch box isle.  they are hard spout, but the holes are much bigger and the milk is easy to get to for them.

Maybe you could try him with them too, they are just as easy to clean as any other sippy cup (like that's easy!) and seem to last longer too.

I suggest that while ever you are continuing to use milk as the main source of calcium then you leave him on the bottle. Once your child starts to eat three serves of dairy a day (eg. yoghurt, cheese etc) they will no longer need to drink large quantities of milk. I continued to use bottles for my daugher (now nearly 3) until just before she turned two, because that was the easiest way for her to fall asleep (at night and also after lunch). Once she was old enough to fall alseep on her own i got rid of the bottles. Throughout the day she always had a sippy cup available and gradually learned to drink larger quantities of fluid from it.

You need to consider you childs sleeping routine and diet. Then you can make a decision from there! I don't see a real need to push a 13 month old baby off the bottle if it is going to create a lot of stress to you and him. I suggest gradually changing the diet (so as to not require large quantities of milk) - but I think you have plenty of time - no need to rush!!
