Re: blocked milk ducts

i couldnt breast feed my son as my milk didnt come in till after i was discharged, and boy did it hurt wen i got blocked ducts. i found wearing a soft bra with no support or wire in the cup helped ease it up a bit plus having a hot shower and massaging. also wen i wasntg in pain i expressed as much out as i could. i was also told some remedies like cabbage leaves, but just find the one that helps u. but try the bra one it helps so much

Re: blocked milk ducts

Ouch, that will be me in the next few weeks!  Try gentle but firm massage in the shower, make sure the water is quite warm, as warm as you can stand.

I also took to breastfeeding my last baby while in the bath, and found that it helped somewhat.  Oh, and what a time saver too! lol

You could always get your other half to massage them for you.  Some times it is easier for someone else to relieve the pressure because they have better 'access' to the trouble spots.

To prevent blocked milk ducts in the future, massage your breasts after a feed and at shower time.  Also, keep them warm as that helps to keep the blood circulation going better.

Re: blocked milk ducts

I am with some of the answers to massage and yes it does hurt as mine did the same thing.  i used to get in a hot shower and massage as the heat made them feel better.  I had mastitis with my two girls and i did not want it back this time so i did what i could as soon as they started hurting.  You could or probably should see your doctor though just in case as you really do sound like you are in a lot of pain.  good luck

Re: blocked milk ducts

In addition to what Phoenix said about letting baby breastfeed over the blocked duct, you'll have to massage your breasts. Massage from the base of the breast to toward the tip. I'll hurt, but do your best. YOu don't want to get mastitis.

Re: blocked milk ducts

make sure your positioning and attachment is all good. Position bubs chin over the blockage. This may mean that you lay bub down and lay over the top on all fours (gravity helps so much with this).

gently massage your breasts from behind the blockage to the nipple during feeding

A warm compress before and during feeding and then a cool one afterwards.

Cold cabbage leaves between feeds-only use til they aren't cold anymore.

Keep feeding bub often-feed off the effected side first and then finish on the other side for a few feeds to see if that helps. Don't be afraid to offer more feeds if you can.

Also try to look into possible causes of the blockage so it's not repeated. Common things are bras digging in, missed feeds, engorgement int he early days, finger jabbing in when holding your breast, bub not attached correctly and/or not draining the breast properly  and other things like that.

Re: blocked milk ducts

Forgot to add if you are unable to remove the blockage over the next 12hrs or you begin to feel unwell, hot fevered etc please seek medical advice as this could be mastitis. Blocked ducts and mastitis have solutions and weaning at this time is a big no no (and I know it's sooo tempting when you're in pain)
