Not sure what to do

William is 8 months old. He is a very happy and active baby- it's hard to keep him still for longer than a minute...

On monday i was at a girlfriends house, he went down for a sleep and woke up ok. About 10 mins after he woke he started screaming. When i picked him up i noticed how hot he was so rushed home for the temp check. It was 38.3 ... Today is now Thursday. Not alot has changed including his temp. He cries alot, hasn't eaten solid foods (this is the fourth day i tried this morning but still he turns his nose to it or he gags) also he has had about 1 big vomit each day since Monday and yest morning and this morning he has woken with diarerah ... (But only once and in the morning).

I went to the doctor and he said that William has a thoat infection. I find this hard to believe as he screams when he cries and when he has a happy moment he will talk and carry on a little.

At the moment he is just laying on the couch watching TV hardly moving and this is how i know how sick he is... He would rather be held whilst going to sleep also, which is not like him at all (but i must say im really enjoying)

If anyone could help me i would really aprreciate it. Thanks in advance

Amanda xxx

Re: Not sure what to do

If he has already been seen by the doctor and you have been told it is a throat infection, then that is probably what it is.

Babies don't understand what pain is, so when the pain is less, they will be happy to talk etc.  The screaming is their way of saying they are  in pain.

The fact he has been vomiting and now has the runs would suggest that he has also had a stomach bug of some sort, but he should be over it pretty quickly

if ur not sure take him to the hospital. it might be safer then listening to the dr even though most of the time they are right but for ur piece of mind it would be better to go.

Personally, i'd get a second opinion if it doesn't sit right with you.  Can you book into a different GP, at my doctors there are about six of them to choose from, it's worth doing if you are not happy with what your gp has said.

Re: Not sure what to do

If he does have a throat infection, that could be why he is screaming, and even though it's an infection, that does not mean that he will have lost his voice.  Only if he has larygitis will he lose his voice.  Also, he would be screaming cause of the pain it is causing him.  What always worked for my babies were cold drinks.  though not alot as it can burn the lungs and cause pain there too.  It's ok if he is not eating, as long as he will drink, even sips every few mins.  Also, just like adult, pain can come and go, especially if the fever goes down the pain normally will too.  Keep him on tylenol or motrin and if he still has a high fever tomorrow take him back to the doctor, as a fever should only last up to 3 days.  Also, he could have a stomach bug along with the throat issue, so the vomiting and diareah are commen.

Another thing, have you checked his teeth?  He may also be teething, which could be the reason to the extended fever, as well as all the other things going on.  Often babies can seem like they have colds or flus while teething, so it's something to check.  Rub his gums and feel for bumps.  If he seems to calm when you massage them, it's more then likely that is also a cause.

But take him back to the doctor is he still has the fever or crying out of pain and the tylenol or motrin is not working.  Good luck and hang in there.

Re: Not sure what to do

I would take him to another doctor or ring nurse on call & see what they say.

Just keep giving him fluids & keep up on the panadol. Hope he gets better soon.
