Fish Oil??

Hi all, lately my bf and I have been looking into Fish Oil and the effects it has on children's behaviour and concentration, and I was just wondering if there were any parents on here who have tried it with their kids, and did they have any bad side effects? So far everythinhg I have read is looking pretty positive, I guess Im just out looking for some negatives now before I make up my mind.

Also, I read that it can be used to help with depression in adults. Has anyone tried it and has it made much difference? Do you still need to continue taking your antidepressants while you are on it?

Thanks for your advice in advance.

Re: Fish Oil??

We have been consuming fish oil for several years in the form of Cod Liver Oil and Neptune Krill Oil.  Cod Liver Oil is fantastic, we give it to our little girl, she even drinks it straight from the spoon!!!  However it is better in the winter months to boost up Vitamin D levels, ever wondered why we get 'the winter blues'?

Here are two links discussing Cod Liver Oil

http://www.westonaprice.org/basicnutrition/codliveroil.html

the next one is a bit more in-depth

http://users.chariot.net.au/~dna/IQ180/index.htm

Krill Oil is relatively new, especially to Australia but is like the king of fish oils

this link is obviously written by someone who sells krill oil but it is representative of most information that I have seen on Krill

http://www.krill-oil-benefits.com/krill-supplements.php

So!  Krill Oil mainly in Summer and Cod Liver Oil mainly in winter

Re: Fish Oil??

The effects of Omega 3 etc are widely documented as having great concerntration etc properties.  Look at the children of Japan, they have a high intake of seafood which is a great source of the omegas and they are pretty intelligent people.

We did try it for a while, got the special kiddie capsules, but our kids wouldn't take them!!!!  Ours don't like taking any medicines at all though.

It is also true that the omegas or fish oils can help with depression sufferers.  I would still be taking any anti depressants for a while at the same time though, because it is never a good idea to just stop them.  Reducing the dose over a controlled amount of time is better.

Re: Fish Oil??

Hi, I have used fish oils for both of my boys at some point.Luke has in the past been quite a challenge as regards his bahaviour and concentration levels.Last year I decided after consulting my doctor to put him on Omega 3 with high levels of DHA in them.I bought EyeQ in capsule form.It did seem to work for a while I would say the first 6 months when you have to give quite high dosage 6 capsules a day. After a while though I, personally don't think they made any difference.Obviously I have read a lot on the internet and minti and a lot of people have had excellent results.I may use them again in the future and certainly wouldn't rule it out.Give it a try but don't expect instant results.

Good luck,Lisa

Re: Fish Oil??

yes the fish one works on the kids. There is one called Eye Q that is really good. I looked into it for my son.

With it for depression, that is another story. It all depends on the meds you are on. Read a advice or blog done by Angie (cookclan) about aidan as he is on Valpro (I am on that too) and it has bad reactions to the fish oil. the Samon one was ok but.

If in doubt ask your pharmisist

Re: Fish Oil??

I use one from salmon that is tested for mercury levels, heavy metals and pesticides.  It has definitely helped boost moods, although i don't know about anti-depressants but i don't see why you couldn't take them along aside each other....you can eat fish with anit-depressants right?  But check with your GP if you are worried.  I'm also trying it with my child to see if it helps concentration in class, and presently i would say yes but he hasn't been on it that long for me to say.

Personally, i think fish oil along with other remedies would benefit anyone.

Re: Fish Oil??

I have heard nothing the but the best about fish oil, espially that derived from salmon as it is the highest in Omega3.  I would just make sure you do some research about dosing and to make sure that it is not taken from fish known to be high in mercury as you never know.... Here is an article about it that has some nice information for you....
