Re: drinking and breast feeding

I was told that as long as I only had 2 in four hours, then it wouldn't cause any problems and I wouldn't need to express off any at all unless for later usage.

I was also told that there is no harm in having the drink while sitting there breastfeeding.  I'm a wine drinker (occassionally) and have been told that red wine in small amounts can soothe and relax bubs so that they will sleep better through the night.  They could have told me that when my first was born!!!!

As long as you are having a lower % based beer, like lite beer,  then you shouldn't have any worries.

Re: drinking and breast feeding

all the advice here is great! i just wanted to add one thing that helps me when i do have the occassional drink.

wait till your baby goes down for the night! lol

even if your baby still wakes up like mine, they normally have a long stretch at some point where they sleep for awhile. wait till they are in bed THEN have a few, it will give you longer b4 your next feed if you want to have a few then you can decide either to stop drinking a few hours b4 (keep milk handy just in case) or just feed them a bottle until their next feed.

Re: drinking and breast feeding

Alcohol is present in BM at the same rate as your blood so if you blow .05 then your milk will be .05

realistically if you feed then have a drink by the time bub wants a feed 2 or more hours later the alcohol will be out of your system and therefor your milk . If you have 2 drinks then 4hrs before it's fully out etc. This will help you make a decision as to whether you need to express enough for a feed or 2 while you are drinking.

There is no need to pump and dump no matter how much alcohol you drink. It eventually leaves the milk just as it leaves your bloodstream.

Re: drinking and breast feeding

I was told when I was breatfeeding my daughter that straight after a feed you could have a drink (in my case it was a glass of wine) and then by a realistic feed 3-4 hours it should be fine.

just be careful as your breastmilk does taste like what you eat with some foods, ie eat beetroot your  milk will be a tad pink.

Re: drinking and breast feeding

Use the whole drink driving guide as your point of reference... So for a female, one standard glass of beer - you really should leave it for at least 2hrs.  If you want to drink it is best to express a few feeds before you have any alcohol, that way you don't have to worry.

Id say if your ONLY having one bottle of beer you probably wont need to express, But if you want to express thats ok and i would express 4 feed worth of milk if you want to have a few drinks to the the alcahol out of the milk
