what an adenoidectomy

My daughter has bad nasal congestion. She's had tonsilitis in the past and 5 respitory infections in the past 7 or 8 months. In the past 3 months she's developed, what I thought was a bad cold. Runny nose and blocked during the night. She at times would stop breathing at least 4-6 seconds which would worry any mother. She only breathes though her nose wether asleep or not. I took her to the GP and the she said that my daughter might have an adenoidectomy.

Re: what an adenoidectomy

"The operation takes 15 to 30 minutes.

Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, the doctor will use special instruments to remove the adenoids from the back of the throat via the mouth.

To stop the blood vessels in and near the adenoids from bleeding, a pack made up of gauze is applied with pressure by the doctor to the area where the adenoids are removed. When the bleeding stops the pack is removed and the operation is finished. Your child will be woken up from the anaesthetic once the bleeding has stopped."

Re: what an adenoidectomy

My son had both his tonsils and his adenoids removed at the same time, and trust me his colds have been so much easier to live with... He would really block up badly when he had them.. And now he does not get as many colds as well.

I can't tell you exactly what adenoidectomy is but I can tell you that it has worked wonders for my kid... It is something in the nose they remove.  I know I have issues with mine when I get allergies they tend to swell (Or so I am told).  But I am not going to get mine out now as I have heard that the older you are when you get the operation the longer the recovery.

Good luck, I am sure once the operation has been had your daughter will be much better for it...

Re: what an adenoidectomy

The adenoids are glands at the back of the nasal passages.  They usually help in the fight of infections but if they don't, they can cause more problems.

My sister had hers out when she was 5, and they took her tonsils at the same time.

You say she only breathes through her knows, which is an indication that they shouldn't need to take them out.  My sister only ever breathed through her mouth, and still does, which meant she couldn't sleep properly and was always getting sick, so they took them out.

If you are in Australia, then it is winter time and many of us have had the rounds of the colds and flues.  Our 2 year old has a cold at the moment, and we are getting her to sleep sitting up a little to help with her breathing and to prevent her congestion from chocking her.  It is working, and she should be over the worst of it by Monday.

Re: what an adenoidectomy

tonsils, adenoids and the appendix are all part of the same system which is the immune system. They can flare up and become inflamed and because they don't really play a big part at all it doesn't do any harm to remove them, The adenoids are found near the nasal area whereas the tonsils are near the back of the throat. when tonsils are removed they often remove the adenoids at the same time (but not always), which is what they did when i was a 4 year old :) it's a pretty simple procedure and she'll be right as rain afterwards.

Re: what an adenoidectomy

My daughter had this and it means she will have have her adenoids removed. This helped her tremendously! It is sometimes done with the removal of the tonsils. The adenoids are very small, usually. However, hers were bigger than what the doctor liked and he removed them.
