3yo boy urinary tract infection???

Hi all.

I have a 3 1/2 yo boy, who has shown several symptoms of something being wrong.  He holds himself, stays on the toilet long time after peeing, has wet the bed and couch during the day (not something he does), his foreskin wont retract even to the tip of his penis, it is about 3mm off in a tight tube.

He is toileting all the time.  I don't know, we have history of type one diabetes, and so this is a fear.  I gave him Ural the other night but he wet the bed again last night.

Has anyone has this before, is it a urinary tract infection and what was the treatment.  Does anyone else treat their child with Ural.

I have a dr apt this afternoon, but in the meantime, I thought I would ask for a parents opinion.

Re: 3yo boy urinary tract infection???

Hi Jodi,

At this age, it's still quite common and normal for the foreskin to be partially adhering to the penis. In general, treatment isn't required, as the tissue will spontaneously separate over time. It's important for your doctor to be made aware of this and its also important that you do not try and retract your sons foreskin forcibily

Most infants are born with a foreskin that cannot be retracted and his foreskin may be tight until after puberty. All this being said it is still VERY important to have your son checked . . .

I hope everything works out for you and your son . . .

Cheers Kellz

Sweetie, with the symptoms you are describing, i think the best advice is take your son to the doctor for further investigation  which you going to do. Also i'm not sure about giving your son  Ural until you see the doctor....poor little fellow, i hope his not in any pain.

I wish  him well, lets us know how you go at the doctor's !

Cheers Janice

It does sound like something is not right. Because of the history of diabetes it's a good idea to take him to the doctor...it may just be a UTI but you can never be too careful! Good luck & let us know how he goes.

Re: 3yo boy urinary tract infection???

Just reporting back.

Dr didn't say much actually.  He has no infection evident, he has no sugar in his urine, so no diabetes, all good.  He does have some protein and so she is sending it away to spawn, see if there is a mild infection.  Other than that dr suggested constipation, although he has done one poo that I know of, he may be constipated and that is causing much of the problem.

That is wonderful news...and constipation does make sense, I should have thought of this when I answered as my oldest frequently urinates when he needs to poo - but it's because he holds onto it as long as he can! Good luck with the protein test & I hope things settle down soon.

Re: 3yo boy urinary tract infection???

So to add to my question.  I can't get him to drink prune juice, so I gave him 4 lots of Coloyxl drops yesterday (as perscribed for a three year old) but still no poo).

I can't change his diet very much because his strength of will won't let him eat something he doesn't want to eat.  I give him lots of healthy options but if he doesn't eat it he goes without.  But offering him only fruit would be cruel, so long as he will eat the other healthy foods.

I will try and dress the fruit up a little today.
