my little man jai ( over 3 & half) has really bad craddle cap, for which we've tried using oil and combing and no result. my hairdresser recommended using a dandruff shampoo on his hair as that usually works. we currently use a kids all in one on his hair.
my questions are: has anyone used an antidandruff shampoo on a little person, did it work? also does anyone know of any reasons not to use the product due to strength or reactions etc?
I've never used dandruff shampoo on my kids until they're at least 12. I have just put baby oil in their hair if they had dandruff at night time, and when i was their hair in the morning or they've done their hair, the dandruff has gone.
Hi, My little guy gets cradle cap the thing that i found works the best is qv bath oil. put a little in the bath, and then wash his hair with it leave it in his hair for a m inute or two. clears up levi's cradle cap in a day or two. which i think is a mircle after trying so many other things that didnt work. And best of all is safe for sensitive skin.
Ego used to make a really good cradle cap stuff that I used on all my kids when they got it. I certainly wouldn't be using an anti dandruff shampoo, I still don't let my 16 yr old use it, and he probably needs it more than not.
Hairdresser don't always know what is best. Cradle cap can be allergy related, and chemicals can make it much worse. I would try a natural alternative, I love Gaia myself, but you could ask a chemist or someone whos child has eczema, as they are often similar.
I personally wouldn't go with the anti-dandruff shampoos because of the chemicals, a lot use coal tar - make your own assumptions about that - i would just be very diligent about trying to remove it. I didn't have much luck with the oil but what i did was this. After washing the hair well (it softens the cradle cap build up), comb through with a fine tooth (nit) comb lifting it off the scalp. Be careful not to scratch the head but just try to lift it off gently. I have had to do it in stages, but it hasn't come back.
Once some of it is lifted off you wil probably have to rewash the hair to remove all the dry flakey skin, and i found that i had to wipe the comb regularly on paper towel or flannel during the combing process. This way works, it may be time consuming but your are not using any harsh chemicals on you boys head. Btw, my son was about the same age still with cradle cap and he let me do it this way.
Anti Dandruff shampoos often have a lot of harsh chemicals. I would suggest consulting a naturopath (there are many free online services, or ones that you can call), before trying that out. Do a search online for natural remedies also. Anti Dandruff shampoos actually treat the symptom, not the cause, there are also dietry factors that may help with the cradle cap, so it is worth checking out.
I personally would not use an anti-dandruff shampoo on a child because of the chemicals in it. My youngest used to get dandruff constantly & I found the best cure was to make sure I rinsed his hair very well...When he has a bath I don't rinse it with bath water I get fresh water out of the tap to rinse his hair. Since I started doing that he hasn't had cradle cap.
I would have thought that using an anti-dandruff shampoo would not be a good idea in a young child because of the chemical concentrations.
Dandruff can also also be helped by using a thick moisturizing conditioner. We use Pantene and it does help.
You could always talk to your chemist about it too, they will know if there is a product out there that will better help. They will also know better than the hairdresser what is safe for your son.
