Re: when should i start giving my three month old daughter baby food
Current recommendations stand that babies only need BM or formula for the first 6mths of life. No solids need to be introduced before this time and doing so can in fact increase the chances of illnesses and diseases later in life.
from birth to somewhere between 4-6mths a baby has an 'open gut'. While the gut is open foreign particles of food can pass through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream. this is thought to be a contributing factor in the incidences of allergies, exzema, food intolerances and asthma.
Between 4-6mths the gut changes to a 'closed gut'. every baby is different and there is no way to tell when the gut is closed that's why the closer to 6mths or beyond that you wait the better the outcome.
Some signs that bub is actually ready for solids includes:- being able to sit up fairly unaided (propping in a high chair is not counted),
losing the tongue poke reflex,
not being satisfied with milk feeds despite being increased over more then a week or 2,
taking an interest in what you are eating (be aware that some where around 4mths babies start immitating you earing-this is not a sign on it's own that bub is ready and if you give bub some toys to play with while you are eating this will help especially if you give a spoon and bowl etc so they can immintate you)
Don't be fooled into thinking you can give foods just because the packet says from 4mths. These were marketed under old recommendations (before the new research was done) and because of a loophole in labelling laws it isn't being changed.
hope this helps
