swelling

Hi there everyone,  this is michelle and i am almost 37 weeks pregnant with my third baby,  but this is the first one that i have carried through the summer and i discovered the problem of swelling.  i have been swollen at the ankles since the begining of june.  now my hand are also swollen and they hurt terribly.  the problem with my feet is that now if i press on my ankles where its most swollen it leaves an  indentation for a few minutes.  it does not puff back up right away.  i have never seen this before and i cant find information about it on the internet.  do any of you know why this is happening and if its ok.  please let me  know

thanks Michelle

Re: swelling

Hi there, I agree with the other advice given! Get your blood and urine checked regularly. My ankles and feet swole up so much, particularly in the last month ...I was checked every few days. I had cankles ( my ankles had dissappeared completely!) and indentations were remaining. This was when I had to start having regular checks for odema. It never came back positive, but the swelling remained ( feet, legs, face and hands ) until bub was born. The heat is a big factor. Make sure you keep up your water intake, put your feet up above heart level, particularly when you are finding it uncomfortable. take cool showers and see if your hubby, partner can gentky massage your feet and lower legs in an upward motion! Try not to sit in one position for too long...I had to drive 6 hours to get to town a couple of weks before bub was due.....I had shocking swelling in the few days after that! Gentle, regular exercise will help stop fluid accumulating in your extremeties.Good luck! Hope all remains well!

Re: swelling

just to be on the very safe side, you can get your blood pressure and protein levels in your urine checked as swelling can be a sign of pre-eclampsia. not trying to scare you. it's most likely the weight of bub, the weather and just being pregnant, but doen't hurt to check

Re: swelling

Hi there, this is oedema which means that the lymphatic system is not doing its job properly. You need to keep your extremeties elevated (higher than your heart) as often as you can, do lots of stretches for the legs and arms, have light massages (deep massage can make things worse), and eat food such as celery which is a natural diuretic. You will need to keep an eye on things and if it gets worse, see a doctor. Also, do not guzzle water. Drink plenty of fluid but take small sips at regular intervals throughtout the entire day. Hope this helps

Re: swelling

Hello Michelle, as the others have said, keep your fluids up and keep your feet up when you can... Try to stay cool and comfortable; though do some light walking when possible.  When it was hot and unbearable, I used to put my feet in a cool basin of water covering the bottom with marbles; so if you swish your feet about a little, you are also massaging your soles

By this stage I trust you are getting seen frequently by your medical professional, and they have eliminated it being a symptom of pre-eclampsia by testing your blood pressure and for proteins in your urine regularly... If not, pay them a quick check up visit, just to be on the safe side.

Re: swelling

I agree with Izzy, it can be due the hot weather & not getting enough fluids...also it would be a good idea to have your blood pressure checked as this can be a sign of high blood pressure or something else. I would not panic as you said it is hot & this does happen. Teshia

Re: swelling

Since it's very hot, you are probably getting less fluids and is making the swelling worse. You have to get a lot of fluid (always keep of a bottle of water with you and drink several a day) and stay off of salty foods. Also, whenever you are seated, elevate your feet whenever possible.
