Well I want to make a carrot and walnut cake today, Just not sure if I should leave out the walnuts so Anthony can have some too. He is 25 mths old and has not had any issues with anyfoods yet, would it be ok to put them in, they will be chopped small if I do so he won't choke!
Because my father is highly allergic to all nuts, it was recommended to me by my doctor that the age for introducing them is two years old.... I have read in some places that if there is no record of anyone being allergic in your family having the allergy that the age of one is ok to try introducing them...
Bu in my case I was told two years... I will admit that it was introduced earlier, I live right next to a hospital and my son wanted the same as his sister, so I gave it to him and just watched him very closely...
As shayne and I neither have a family history to food alergies, I gave him some and just watched him closely (nothard to do when he's hanging off me like amonkey all day) and there was no reaction what so ever to walnuts. Just wanted to let you all know. If there had been a history there I would of avoided it for a while longer.
There may not be any reaction the first or second time you give him nuts BUT please remain vigilant. I am glad thatr things seem to have gone well . . .
Most Dr's and peadiatricians DO NOT recommend you give you child nuts before the age of three and if there is any history of allergies to nuts in the family then they recommend you have your child tested for a nut allergy. . . .
As the mum of a child whom is intolderant of many foods I would have to say NO, seeing your child react to an allergy especailly food orientated is terrifying . . . . Here is a LINK to a site that is very informative in relation to nuts and allergies in kids.
Our pediatrician recommended waiting till 36 months before introducing any kind of nuts because allergies can develop the earlier the kids are exposed to he nuts. But all 3 of our kids were eating peanut butter around age 2 because let's be honest - there's only so much you can put between two slices of bread when you send them to daycare!
If you have a family history of food allergies I'd be careful and wait, otherwise go for it! Just give him a little and wait a few hours to make sure he doesn't have a reaction.
HI there, I waited until my children were old enough to have skin prick test, as my husband is allergic to nuts, and the kids have various food allergies; but, if there is no history of food intolerance, go for it. Nuts contain protien and zinc and a bunch of other stuff that is excellent for the growing (and grown body) Just cut em fine in the blender. If you are very unsure about giving him nuts you can rub a piece of walnut on his gums and if he doesn't have a reaction within 2 seconds to 1 hour you should be ok. Good Luck
