6 yo boy still in night time nappies

Hi, I'm new to this site, and only stumbled across it whilst googling earpiercing for my 8 yo girl (got many interesting websites ;-).  Anyway, my son is 6 and still wears a nappy to bed, he goes to the toilet before bed, but in the morning he has a big wet soggy nappy. Taking him to the toilet during the night doesn't work, as he still pees before or after we've taken him - and he doesn't wake up when we take him. Which leads to - he could sleep through WW3 he is a very sound sleeper, nothing wakes him up alarms included.  Has anyone else had a child this old who wore nappies, and when does it end?  He doesn't care about it and nor do I really, but it would save some money if I didn't have to buy the nappies!

Re: 6 yo boy still in night time nappies

my youngest daughter was the same.  She was 4 and her nappies were saturated by morning.  I used to use pull ups by that stage very expensive though and someone used to tell me i should make her lay in her own pee and wash her own sheets and she will stop i didn't try that i thought that was cruel as i really felt she couldn't help it.  We did the same as you took her to the toilet numerous times at night and eventually she did stop.  i can't remember now but i think we rewarded her for so many nights wet free.  Good luck and it will eventually stop.

A friend of mine had a similar problem with her son in regards to bedwetting. He also had a constant huge thirst and was eventually  diagnosed with diabetes.  It could be worth getting this checked out.

well, at least he's not streessed about it. As Kellz says, it's still pretty common at 6. Your family doctor is unlikely to treat it until he reaches 7, as many resolve themselves by then. One of my friends, her son (6.5) only resolved it when HE decided he cared enough, and the house move stress was over. But he is a stubborn one. You will know whether your son is at all like this, and what may motivate him. Others really do want to change and cant by themselves. Carry on as you are until the doctor is ready to helpIMO - you sound as if you have the best attitude to it!

Hi there,

First off WELCOME to Minti . . . .

Now as to your son, please try not to stress to much as believe it or not many children still wet the bed at this age. It sounds as if your son is indeed a very deep sleeper and yes this may be a problem but I doubt it. . .  My sister had this same problem and she went into panic mode only to have the expensive doctor she paying to see tell her that if her son was still bedwetting in 12 months come back . . .

All the research that I did for my sister basically said the same thing . . So perhaps you should wait another 12 months and if you are still concerned see you docotr and ask for some tests to be done. There is a medication that you can get from your doctor to help but its best to wait and see.

Here is a link to another site that may be helpful . ..  CLICK HERE

There is also a mat you can purchase to place under your sons sheet. It sounds an alarms if it detects urine and will wake your son up . . . Some parents have had success with this . . . CLICK HERE for more info and other products which may be useful

I hope this helps . . . . Cheers Kellz

Both my kids wet. my son daily and my daughter occasionally.

we dont use nappies as I did research into it and found it wasnt helpful to the child. they have them if they stay out at a friends but not at home. I just washt heir blankets daily (great for their astma)

We are seeing a paed in a week about it and I can post more for ya.

BTW my kids are 6 and 4.

The bad news,LOL is it ends when he is ready and his bladder mature enough, ugh. I was 11-12yrs when I stopped. I could google the statistics for you, but the quickest answer is that so many children do wet at night that it is, lucrative for the companies to make night time pants up to age 12yrs. As long as you have ruled out any medical probs then you may just have to wait it out. It is great that neither yourself nor your son are worried though. Good luck and you never know he may stop soon, fingers crossed for you,LOL.
