formula fed babies

Was just wondering how parents out there fed their babies. Did you go by every 4hours and a certain amount or did you feed on demand??

Ashton is 2weeks old and at night he drinks around 80ml every 3-4 hours but during the day he just drinks 50mls here and there, probly every 2-3hours. Is this ok?? Ive tried to keep him up for longer to feed more but he isnt interested after 50mls. He is peeing and pooing fine.

Re: formula fed babies

beleive it or not but all babys are born with a bult in full-o-metre they all now how much they can eat and they will wae more often if there not getting enough the first time. so dont worry let him go at his own pace youll see him grow just as normal as any baby. be thankful you havent got stormei she emotys both my boobs in one sitting then wants more within a hour.

Re: formula fed babies

Hi Dannii,

I think you are doing just fine, my son used to do this and still eats quite often.   We demand fed 'cause I think that if you are hungry you eat, right? same with your baby.  You can not feed  someone that is not hungry.

My son never drank what it said on the tin.   He just drank smaller amounts often, every 1.5hrs to 2 hrs. Sometimes 2.5hrs.   Even if I tried to lengthen the time between feeds, he would cry and cry 'cause he was hungry, so I just fed him.

I wouldn't worry as long as he is putting on weight and peeing and pooing, he will be just fine.

Re: formula fed babies

For the first few weeks or even months, depending on his size, demand feeding is the best way to go. You'll find once he starts to fill out more and put on more weight he'll probably want more and that's when the 4 hourly feeds come in. He'll let you know when or if he wants more.

Thats just what I would of said! Go with the flow for now and when he's bigger, you'll find a pattern emerges.

Re: formula fed babies

i was told to feed every 4 hours but my son sleeps right through the night so i didnt bother to wake him.  when he's hungry he will let me know.

as long as his nappy is fine and he is putting on weight  then he is right.  if he's only taking 50mls then he might not be that hungry.  dont panic i thought the same thing and when i told my Dr about it he told me as long as he's eating and putting weight on then hes fine.

good luck with everything

Re: formula fed babies

Sounds absolutely normal to me, i wouldn't recommend feeding to a schedule, its much easier to go with the flow and feed him when he is hungry letting him have as much or as little as he wants at the time.  Trying to keep him awake when he wants to be asleep will only make him over tired and harder to settle.

I think you're doing a great job with him!!

Re: formula fed babies

i formula feed all mine and as long as he is putting on weight it is fine he is drinking more at night to compensate for what he isnt drinking during the day i would worry they do reccommend demand feeding i did that on my first 2 and then changed for my last 2. but at 2 weeks old demand is the way to go you sound like your doing a great job.

Re: formula fed babies

I wouldnt worry hun. I fed on demand with the bottle and the breast. They know when they are hungry and there has been research not to overfeed a formula fed baby. When mia finished sucking her bottle i tried to give it back and she rejected so thats when the problem resolves if u force them to have it they become over weight babies
