I have been thinking about trying baby sign language but would first like to hear other parents experiences. Have you found it effective, easy, useful? Also what kind of sign language do you use? Is there a certain baby sign language (thinking of meet the fockers..lol..) or is normal sign language used... any info would be great
hi i did this with jade, just basic, water, food ,more, etc even mum n dad here is the site i used, even has a person in the corner showin u how to do it!! www.auslan.org.au it pretty amazing, and yes u look like atool at first then they suprise u and do it,
This is a great Site, they actually tell u if u go do an auslan course to go to this site because you can do a lot of revision so not only for teaching kids you can learn yourself on how to do AUSLAN (Australian Sign Language) not to be confused with ASL (American Sign Language). Yes each country has its own version. I started my Cert 2 in AUSLAN I was going to teach my son but my partner wanted him to learn English 1st.
LOL, I was going to add a comment, but someone added a link to my advice anyway... So if you see it, you will see I really do think it is a great idea to enhance your child's communications skills in this way as early as you can.
we started with sign langage with our son very early - at first he didn't at all, and we felt like fools!!
we mainly did bath, please, more, food, milk - plus tried a range of others - eventually as we were about to give up, he started immitating us!! - joy - we used it heaps even after he started talking...
it was great to be able to communicate and for him to be able to express himself - i sincerely recommend it - as someone else said, it doesn't really matter if the signs aren't precise or correct..
btw, his diction is absolutely staggering now (at 2yrs) - don't know if it was helped by signing or not, but can't stop him talking now!!
here's the signing site we used - awesome - has little videos!! link
I used baby sign with Danny from him being 6 months old and it really helped him to reduce frustration, and link words together quicker. I believe his language is as good as it is due to the signing at the beginning.
I used Makaton signing that I use with special needs kids in the UK cos it is very like gestures, and I know a lot of signs. I would suggest looking for groups that do signing and singing, or go and find books. Your local library will probably have baby signing books now that it is common. As a last resort I would suggest a programme in the UK called "Something Special" which teachers simple Makaton signs and maybe able to be ordered abroad (i'm not sure though).
To be honest the type of signs are not important as long as you are consistent and the people that look after you child know what they mean. You could even invent your own gestures as long as you know what you are saying!! Most of all have fun - I hope it goes well xx
I too want to teach my baby sign language. My bfs cousin has taught his daughter the simple things. She is 1yrs old and it makes life easier becasue they now know when she wants milk or water or if her head is sore ect.. Try looking on youtube, thats what im going to do.
