Re: help reflux!

Here is some great information from the Australian Breastfeeding Association. Don't forget that you can call their helpline 24hrs a day to get further info OR they also have a resource list of counsellors who have personally been through this and breastfed-so you can chat to someone who knows what you are going through.

Re: help reflux!

I have visted that site before. The site I listed below actaully has forums where you can type in questions and get answers back in real time from other parents.

Both sites are good.

Re: help reflux!

maybe you could try giving her one or two feeds of formula instead, there are brands available that are designed specifically for bubs with reflux, one i know of is called novalac.

Re: help reflux!

Ashton is doing the same thing and he is 2weeks old. He has bad wind problems and sometimes wants a bottle to comfort the pain. Then because he is having to much he throws it up. Maybe your little girl ahs wind problems and is feeding for a comfort and drinking to much. Try burping her inbetween feeding, if she gets that wind up she will know how much more milk she wanst to fill her stomach.

Ashton was bad the first couple of days and by the time i could get a burp out he would vomit. I went to a chemist on Friday and they said 1month is the youngest they can give anything. Talk to your health nurse.

Re: help reflux!

hey sweetie,

3 out of my 4 kiddies had reflux and 2 of them were that bad that they were prescibed medication for it. If the child looses weight that is when the dr or health nurse will be concerned and place them on medication to calm it down, which did help my little ones. Otherwise there isnt too much more you can do other then giving them formula which is designed for reflux babies or trying the on the shelf medication for them, but as your little girl is only 2 and half weeks old you wont be able to get anything for her as she is too young to be treated. The chemist will tell you this, most on shelf medication (natural ones) are recomended for at least 1mth olds, some are for older. If you are concerned you should go and see your health nurse and get little girl weighed and see how much she is putting on......It could also be that she is a windy baby like someone else said...go get her checked out hunny!!

Re: help reflux!

We thought my little fella had reflux, even the doctor and the chemist said it was reflux.  We tried mylanta and other stuff.  It all seemed to work but after a couple of weeks it would go back to the same puking machine.

In the end I tried brauer colic medicine.  Yes, it was wind!  Brauer is fantastic!!  He stayed on it until he was off the milk.  Its natural and you have to give it every 4 hours (before every feed) but I swear by it.  Give it a go, it cant make it any worse??

Re: help reflux!

I am sorry that you are dealing with reflux. We had MAJOR issues with it over here. Feel free to mail me any questions....

If it looks like htere is any pain going on you may really want to see a GI and ask for some meds. They may try a H2blocker first. I would not give that but a couple of days to work. Most kids with reflux needs PPI to stop the pain form the acid.

I agree with Izzy that a child with reflux who is vomitting that much needs to be monitored for weight gains and loses. Jedd was monitored through a home nurse. He had other medical issues at that time though....:(

You can also eliminate things from your diet to lessen the relfux isues.

I sounds like he may be eating too much which is a sign tha the is in pain. Some kids who are in pain will OVER eat to sooth the pain in the throat. Some kids are like my Jedd and completely stop eating all together. He required tub efeeds to sustain his life.

I will add a link to my article on Reflux.

Re: help reflux!

Try and burp often at least before changing onto the next breast. And when you burp, don't jiggle her too much. After breastfeeding, keep her upright for at least 30 minutes and avoid too much movement.  When she goes to sleep, elevate her a little by rolling up a blanket and putting it under the mattress of the bassinet/crib.

Watch what you eat and watch her for signs of discomfort. Avoid spicy foods.

Please consult with you doctor. If she's burping up everything she's eaten, she has to be monitored for weight gain/loss and your doctor may prescribe medication.

Don't leave this alone too long because it may get worst. If vomiting is the only problem now, it may progress to pain and then you'll have a baby who doesn't stop crying for as much as 1 hour after feeding.

My twins suffered from reflux, but it responded well to medication. We only had to use the medication for about 6-8 weeks and that was the end of it. Also, one day I wasn't thinking and ate spicy food and my girls suffered for it. It was horrible.
