2nd labour?

Hi.

Well this may sound like a really silly question but i'm going to ask anyway!

I had my first child by an emergency c-section due to non-progresseion of labour (18 hours of labour and only got to 1cm dialated : (

I'm really looking forward to having another baby, my son is fantastic with babies and other children and i can't wait for him to have a little brother OR sister (he adores his baby cousin and everytime he is near him he can't keep his lips off him, it's so sweet)

Usually 2nd labours are atleast halved in their duration as the body has been thru it before, and most times much less than half.

My question is, as i didn't have my son naturally this wouldn't really apply to me with my second child would it????

I really want to have a natural birth with bub #2 which is what i wanted for bub #1 but the doctor advised it wasn't the best option as bub's was starting to go in to stress.

Any advice would be great

Re: 2nd labour?

I had a planned c-section with number 1. He was breech. I had a successful VBAC with number 2. What I found helpful was the my doctor was very supportive of the VBAC. The labor was long but as long as my daughter was not in distress, we just kept going for it. I was pleased that I was able to have a natural birth. I think what I have to remember about both births is that I got beautiful, healthy babies out of the experience. I learned that it was more important to have my children delivered safe than to worry as much about how they got there. I was depressed about the c-section the first time around but it is hard to stay sad about something out of my control on the one hand and on the other hand, know that the doctor did what was best for the baby and for me.

Re: 2nd labour?
Hi! I had my first by c-section and the 2nd by VBAC. I was told that the labour for no2 would be the equivalent as a first baby, even though it was my 2nd. He told me to expect 10-12 hours. In the end it was actually 10 hours induced and labour for a day before that, but that's a whole other story.... I had not really been in labour for my first, so it may be different if you have had a labour, but a c-section anyway, I don't know. Did they ever work out why you were not dilating? Anyway, I have written some advice on VBACs and birthing naturally, so look me up and have a read. Hope that helps (sorry my computer is playing up so I can't place links myself).

Re: 2nd labour?

Hi, yes the second labour usually is shorter, but in your case l am not sure. Every labour is different and it depends on alot as well. Seeing you have had a c section as your first, there usually is no reason why you cant have a VBAC.....unless there is problems. l had a VBAC after my c section, there was no problems. But l had 3 naturals before my c section and my last was the VBAC. The best thing to do would be to talk with your Ob or midwife and find out the information you need in having a VBAC and if your hospital is willing to let you try.

Good luck

Re: 2nd labour?

Yes usually the second labour is halved. Both my labours were long my first 28 hours my second i was induced so it was ummm 15 or 16 hours. So yeah sort of halved but i was induced and being induced it should be less than that too. Im not sure if would apply with your second being u had a c section. And depends if you plan to have natually alot of obs dont like doing them after a c section (v backs that is) some hospitals will some wont too risky if they dont have the on call people. Sorry if i didnt help much. I had awful births myself
