Biting While Breastfeeding

My 10 Month old keeps biting me nearly everytime I try to feed him. Does anyone have any ideas how to stop him?

I had to stop feeding my daughter because she shreaded my nipples, but I persevered till she was 12 months. I don't think I can go on for 2 more months, he's already drawing blood.

Please help!

Re: Biting While Breastfeeding

My oldest only ever bit me once - just after he got his first teeth...it frightened me that much that I jumped & yelled & he never did it again! My youngest though bit quite often & I would detatch him, laying him on me knees so he could see my breast but not get it, and say "no" firmly. He would not bite again that feed and it slowed him right off biting after a while. The other alernative would be to use a nipple shield so he isn't breaking through your skin. Good luck!

Re: Biting While Breastfeeding

My DD1 hated being detched and laid on the floor - so I only had to do it twice in 2 years with her! DD2 understands "no" & detatchment ok but takes longer to get the hint. She definitely bites when she's teething, and sometimes at the end of a feed.

But it's always a passing phase, so dont think about it as 2 months of biting! Far too scary! Usually for me it's just a few days.

DD2 usually does it just before a tooth cuts through. She's "nibbling" at the moment, but the day she actually bites (more of a nip though painful) I shall search her mouth! I found out the hard way that she can bite much harder than she does on my nipple, when she mistook my finger for a sausage recently! I couldnt bend it for a day - I'm very grateful she doesnt bite this hard during feeding!

When I'm sore from biting, I tend to find that one side has escaped better than the other, so I tend to feed her more on the comfortable side to give the other one a rest - only giving relatively short feeds from that one.

Hope that helps a little!

Re: Biting While Breastfeeding

Is the biting happening because he is teething? If so then doing things to relieve his need to chew before you feed will help (cold teething ring, teething gel etc). Also as someone else suggested as soon as he bites take him off and say no. try again a few minutes later.

Also you may need to pay attention to his feeding to work out when he's biting. Some babies bite at the end of the feed so as soon as you notice bub isn't actively sucking take him off. You can offer the other side if you don't think he's full but as soon as he's not actively feeding take him off.

Both my boys did this at various stages of teething and using a combination of the above methods (depending on why they were biting) things settled down quickly.

When you've finished a feed express a little milk onto the sore nipples and allow to air dry so they heal quicker.

Hope this helps

You can buy a thing called a nipple sheild, that way if bubs bites you cant feel it.

Re: Biting While Breastfeeding

A friend of mine had this problem with a much younger baby. Her infant health nurse advised her to detach him, lay him on his back in her lap and say 'no', loudly and firmly. Then give it about 30 seconds before putting him back on. It seemed to work I imagine this might be even more effective with a 10 month baby as he will certainly be starting to understand 'no' a bit more.
