should i be worrying myself sick??

ok,some of you know that Myah has been sick for a good week and has also been teething (like always) along with being sick. She hasnt been eating this whole time,to get her to eat her food has been impossible!! I am worrying myself sick!!! Its been days that she has had a good meal, probably 5 days easy,is only eating her weetbix for breakfast and then hardly a thing during the day. Its so hard as she is just constantly crying when she knows its time to eat and will smack the food away ,even without trying it. When i took her to the Dr on monday she said she will eat in a few days and not to worry but i just cant help worrying so much....can anyone tell me how their little ones were with eating while teething or just after being sick??? She is now 17mths old.....please help me from worrying so much, just need to hear similar experiences.....

PLEASE.......lol....

Re: should i be worrying myself sick??

i had this problem with ebs not long ago she had a cold and would only eat brekkie then nothing after all i did was kept her fluids up and kept tying to offer food, but trust me theres nothing to worry about children under 3 dont have the brain function adults have and they really can not starve themselves its imposible so if shes eating her breky but nothing else then shes still getting food but if your really worried try giving juice to her and milk/formula as they are good for them and not to heavy on the belly..

good luck with her hope shes better soon.

Re: should i be worrying myself sick??

Someone told me that kids diets must be viewed over a whole week and not as a day. Even when they are well and not teething (is there such a day?!) they will have hungry days and non-hungry days. My DD2 has just had a sickness & diarrhea bug and a few weeks before that Chicken Pox, and she has been (for her) eating a tiny amount for about 6 weeks now. But actually, she still eats enough to do at least one dirty nappy a day, so she must be eating a fair bit. And she is alert and cheeky. I guess when they go through spells like this they just work off their stored fat. Several of my friends know exactly when their skinny child is about to have a growth spurt as they go from picky eater to big eater and grow a tummy. Then the tummy goes and it's time to buy new clothes and shoes again! So PLEASE dont stress about it. Weetabix is fine this week! There is a real risk that she will see you stressed about food and react to that, turning it into a battleground, and you really dont want that! Somehow force yourself to trust the doctor, set yourself a deadline to go back to see him again in a week or something, and try eating Myah's favourite food yourself. Maybe she will ask for some of it off your plate? Some kids seem to think that what's on mummy & daddy's plate must be better than what's on theirs. Anyway, just make sure she drinks, that is the important thing. The food will follow. Honest!

Re: should i be worrying myself sick??

I agree,

please don't worry yourself sick..I have also worried myself sick in the past too though, so I know what you are going through..

Toddlers at this age, can eat less than what you think would satisfy an ant, even when they are not feeling sick!

If your little one is sick and teething, the lack of appetite + the teething pain are likely the culprit..

As long as she is getting some fluids and doesn't have a fever, isn't lethargic or doesn't have any other serious signs, whe will come around!

My 17 month old LOVES sugar free popsicles!!

I don;t know if you are interested in trying these, but the pros are that they may numb the teething pain and will get some fluid into her!

Good luck and I hope your little one feels better!

Re: should i be worrying myself sick??

Been there done that and still going through it.  Teething is a terrible thing for our kids to go through.  I wish they were born with all their teeth!

My son went through a period of not eating it used to drive me nuts.  He would only eat a little at a time.  Eventally 4 top teeth appeared.  Now I think we are going through it again!

Try not to worry.  The best adivce my mum ever gave me was that kids will not starve themselves.  When she eats just keep feeding her until she pushes you away.  Maybe try feeding her little bits often.....   Is she still on milk?  If she is and she is still taking that then that is a good sign...

She should pick up very soon.   If not take her to the Docs just to rule out anything else.  Let us know how you get on.

Hey hun

Dont go worrying your little heart. Myah is going to be fine. They go through this especially when teething it really is painful on them. Just give it time she will eat if she is hungry honest.

Love ya kell

Re: should i be worrying myself sick??

Hi Na,

Honestly, I went through the exact same thing as you, just a few months ago!

Alisha (as you know, is 14 months now), and was teething really badly..
For a couple months, she would eat hardly anything for each feed..
Basically, it'd be a couple teaspoons each feed.. and I feed her 5 times a day (3 main meals, 2 snacks)..

I got so worried that I booked in an appointment with the Child Health Nurse..
And she assured me that things would be fine..
I told her that I was scared it wasn't the teething, because it lasted so long..
But in the end, it WAS the teething !!
Her eating picked up, and she was back to eating normal meals..

However, she has gone back to it (not as bad as before though), and most days, she'll hardly eat a thing..
Like, for breakfast, she'll have a few teaspoons of Weet Bix, but she'll want her milk FIRST.. hehe
Sometimes, she might not want much for lunch, but she kinda makes up for it at dinner (but just)..

I guess my point is, I am the the biggest worrywart around (trust me. lol)...
But right now, I'm not too worried about Alisha..
And the main reason is because the Child Health Nurse put my mind at ease..
While they're teething, it's a hard period for our kid, it's a hard period for us..
But it ALWAYS eventually picks up..

And like my Child Health Nurse said, all you can really do is, when they DO want the food, to give it to them the best you can..
Basically, if Myah seems to be taking the food well, keep going, feed her till she's full... Take advantage of her hunger!! hehe

I'm so sorry to hear that Myah is so unwell.. I do hope her teething goes away soon..

But I think that Myah will be back to her normal self, in no time !!!!!
Just like my little Alisha will be ok, in no time as well !!!! :)

If ya ever need me, you've got my shoulder to cry on !! :) hehe

I hope I helped, a little at least :(

Love ya hun,
Thuy xoxoxox

Re: should i be worrying myself sick??

thank you so much for your advice Thuy. This is just what i needed, to hear about other mums and their worries. I know i worry way too much but i just cant help it sometimes. Ya just get that stupid thought in ya head and cant get rid of it till someone sets you straight. I havent gone to my nurse for mths, maybe i should???

Thank you for telling me about little Alisha, being a mum is so hard sometimes. I have others say to me that i should know aboutthese things as i have had 4 kids but i have forgotten so much!!!! This is why its important to have the SCRAPBOOK!!!!!!!

LOL

thank you heaps...

Re: should i be worrying myself sick??

Hi Naomi,

My 2 year old son did the same thing about a month ago. He went 6 days with only eating 1/2 a tub of yoghurt for the whole 6 days. The only thing he would have was about 200mls of milk twice a day.

The doctor said that while he was sick not to worry too much, If kids are hungry they will eat. Maybe if she still isn't eating in a few days take her back to the doctors.

Hope Myah gets better soon,

Juzzy xoxox

Re: should i be worrying myself sick??

Hey Naomi,

Sorry to hear how worried you are, i hope little myah gets well soon!! Now i dont know how you can get her to eat cos you cant force anyone to eat. I would try offering her more at breakfast time because its the most important meal of the day. Keep up the fluids too, that will keep her too. Maybe even try a toddler formula so that she gets the nutrients she is missing out on by not eating.
