When do babies learn to swim?

My 6-month-old daughter LOVES the water, and while I know she is way too early to start swim classes, I was just kind of curious as to when is a good time to start teaching them? Is 2- or 3-years-old too early?

I entered a long comment earlier but it disappeared. :-(

Do you have a YMCA near you? They offer parent & child swim classes starting at 6 months. I enrolled my son when he was 6 months and he loved it. At this age though it's all games just so familiarize them with the water. When my son was 18 months old he was able to bo on his own (with a floaty) and not hold on to me. He was then taught to kick an to 'reach' with his hands. But formal swimming class doesn't start until 3 (at the YMCA) when parents no longer need to be on the water with the children.

Ask at your local swimming pool.  In many countries swimming is available from a young age and it is a great activity for many reasons not least a healthy attitude to exercise and keeping fit in a fun way.

Re: When do babies learn to swim?

you can teach your child to swim from 12 weeks as it helps develop their motor skills classes wont take them though till they are about 6 months. then it also depends on where you are.

my 14 week old swims in the bath he loves it (cept wen i put bubbles in as he doesnt like the bubbles).

hope you find something and good luck

Re: When do babies learn to swim?

We dunked ours under water after their cords fell off.  Dump water over their heads in the tub, etc.  The oldest 4 are all on swim team now, and the youngest 2 are on track.  In fact my 12 month old will dunk himself he loves it so much.  He'll just fling himself into the water smiling and wait for me to fish him out!!!  We never gave them formal lessons until they were 5 years and were learning strokes.

Re: When do babies learn to swim?

Hi There

Oh no, you can start her anywhere from 6 months! I started my little man at Mum and Bub classes when he was 6 months old. It was great. He loved it. If you go somewhere like fitness perfection, it is about $110 for 10 lessons and the pool is really warm. They go for about half an hour each week.

In Mum and Bub classes you go in with her and they teach her things like how to kick, splashing in the water, getting in and out of the pool (you holding her of course) holding a kickboard. I didnt put my sons head under the water until about week 7. They dont make you do anything you dont want to thou.

I would advise going now if your daughter is a water baby. My son loved it, i will be taking him back again as soon as it warms up again!!

Have fun! Cass xxx
