When do kids feed themsleves?

I have an almost 14mth old who can only feed himself finger food.  We give him a teaspoon at each meal, but usually that ends up on the foor.  Somtimes I put food on the spoon and give it to him but more often than not that is on the floor to.

What is the best way to teach kids to feed themselves?  I know all kids a different but when did your kids feed themselves???

Thanks

Re: When do kids feed themsleves?

Our little bub is the same age and she is just starting to get curious about utensils. I usually give her a spoon and a fork with the easy grip handles designed for little hands. She gives it a go with them and she has had a little success. It is easier for her if we spear the food onto the fork and then she moves it to her mouth. She is much happier tho if we give her finger food. We just figure she will do it when she is ready.

Jaydee started eating baby rice just before 6mths... He grabbed the spoon off me after the first mouthful and fed himself from then.

Re: When do kids feed themsleves?

DD1 was a lazy tike (thank goodness) and didnt bother feeding herself much until 3, though she could skewer things onto a fork by 18 months I seem to remember. DD2 was feeding herself finger food by 6 months and at 21 months has just insisted on feeding herself yoghurt with a spoon, which is a bit messy. She also likes the fork - I think it makes things a bit easier, the journey from plate to mouth - as things fall off spoons so easily! Unfortunately everything takes practice. You may like to encourage his dexterity with as many jigsaws, bricks etc as you can, just in case this transfers across to mealtime dexterity?
