pro-biotics not refrigerated

My doc prescribed me antibiotics yesterday for tonsilits and recommended i also take probiotics to prevent bub and i getting thrush as has happened in the past, anyway i just noticed today that the acidopholus (sp) tablets are meant to be refrigerated-the pharmacist didn't mention this and so they have been out on the table for a good 24 hours.  Will they still be ok or do you think they're now useless?

Re: pro-biotics not refrigerated

were they in the fridge when you bought them?  They are usually kept in a little fridge at the chemists?  I left mine in the car for a few hours once in summer, they told me to chuck them.  If your chemist didnt give them to you out of the fridge i would take them back and ask for a refund as they would have been no good right from the start.

They are great to take though... I had a never ending cycle of thrush and urine infections when I was pregnant.  I'd get anti biotics to treat the infection then I would get thrush from the anti biotics.  Once I started taking the inner health plus I was fine.  Didnt get them again.

Hi there,

My sister works at a drug warehouse and she is responsable for safe drug storage . . I telephoned her to ask your question and she was shocked that your pharmacist did not advise you to keep probiotics in the fridge . . Apparently it is standard practice . .  Perhaps you should remind your pharmacist as it is an important message.

Cheers Kellz

Hi honey,

I rang my sister again and she said because it's winter then they should be fine . .  you can keep them out of the fridge BUT it does weaken the probiotics over a period of time . . .

Even I have learn't something . . Mine have been sitting in my medicine chest, now they are in the bin as I've had them there since summer . .  Oooopsy - Live and learn . . .

Cheers Kellz

This will depend on how warm your house is really....if it is not too warm they may still be viable. Best thing to do is put them straight in the fridge - what the heat does is deactivate the bacterias (you can actually get ones that don't need to be refrigerated - Blackmores make some) but if they haven't got too warm they should be fine.

Thanks, being winter we've had the heater on and off so it has been warm here.  I put them straight in the fridge as soon as i realised - guess i'll find out soon enough if they're still ok

If I was you I would also speak to your pharmacist as they are meant to tell you when you buy them that they need to be refrigerated...I worked in pharmacy for 5 years and it is compulsary to tell everyone that buys probiotics that they need to be refrigerated - and they are not cheap so you may be lucky enough to have them replace them for you as it was their mistake!
