how ro know if baby is deaf

Hi there

I was just after some info I have a 4 month old baby and I concerned about her hearing, Kalani has had the new born screening test adn passed the 2nd time.

Latley we will stand next to her and call her name or clap our hands and she doesnt respond at all. Even if there is a loud noise ( and in a house full of boys there is always loud noises) she doesnt even get that startled reflex.

I have made a appointment with the hearing people but I was justafter some info with people who have deaf children or children born with hearing problems and what symptons you had and how hard it is to adjust to life

thanks heaps all

kate

Re: how ro know if baby is deaf

OK both me and my son has had hearing problems, this will be shocking but about 70% of children have some sort of hearing problems, my son's hearing is coming bak slowly. I had to have an operation to get my hearing bak.

My son hearing is being monitored by the hearing specialists, once every 6 months we go bak to have it checked so that if it does start to go backwards they will be on it straight away.

Just wait and see what they say, they just might want to monitor it for a bit so that it doesnt get much worse.

Hope this helps

Re: how ro know if baby is deaf

i though the same with my son. when i was in hospital with him i was in the lounge watching telly and the cleaner started up the vac and he didnt even flinch. came back he has normal hearing, even at home he doesnt jump at loud sounds. if it makes you feel more comfortable then see your dr but like the other mum said she might be used to the sounds in the house.

good luck and hope everything turns out alright.
