traveling with toddlers

 Hey all,

We've been doing a lot of traveling lately (as it's been summer here in the states) and my son (21 months) is too big for his pack and play, and even if he weren't he's been in a "big boy bed" for almost a year, now, and wouldn't suffer it anyhow.

At grandmas, we cover the cushions from the loveseat with a comforter, and he seems to be okay with that--but that's not an option everywhere.  He can't sleep with us when we all go together, as we don't want to completely destroy the MONTHS it took to get AWAY from that, and Hubs is a heavy sleeper and it makes him nervous.

I had considered taking his crib mattress with us, but it takes a lot of room.

How do you sleep with a toddler on trips?

I got Grub a readybed to take camping and he loves it. It's a smaller size airbed that comes with it's own pump , carry bag and attached bedding. Much easier than lugging around portacots or mattresses.

We always got two beds at a hotel, and put the toddler in one by himself.  When he's tired enough, he'll stay there.  Also, you can ask for a rollaway or cot to put in your room.  In a pinch, you can always pile extra blanket and pillows on the floor!

We have an inflatable mattress (twin size) that we put on the floor. It's excellent since it doesn't take up any room when deflated. I use the Cole brand from Target (Wal-Mart may have them too). It's about $15, plus you have to buy the pump.

Or you can buy a full size or queen size one just in case you need to lie down with him.
