A pain in the Bum!

Hi.

I know that the title may seem funny but I am now 26 weeks and 3 days pregnant and for the last couple of days have been constipated. I managed "to go" yesterday but all day today I have had a pain in my back passage which fills sharp and like pressure, I didn't strain yesterday so does anyone know what might have caused this? Did you suffer from anything like this while pregnant?

Many thanks

Clare x

Re: A pain in the Bum!

I had this with Aralia.  I found it was worse when she had her back to mine as the widest part of her head was then pushing against everything.

Naturally, it got worse the closer I got to having her.  Keep your fluids up and maybe take a fibre supplement like metamucil or prunes and prune juice will work just as well.

When you need to go, go.  Don't let anyone or anything stop you because the longer you fight the need, the harder it will be to go when you do try.

Re: A pain in the Bum!

Hi Clare,

What you are describing sounds very much like 'constipation' . . I feel your pain as during my last pregnancy I suffered with it severely as Sumara spent most of her time dowm low and against my bowel . .  The hopsital got me onto some GREAT stuff called "FYBOGEL" . .

It comes in satches which you mix with water . . It is not bad at all and it really helped. . .  Also I doubled my water intake as during pregnancy you need to drink extra water and if you are not drinking enough you can also end up constipation . .

I hope you are able to get sorted out soon.

Cheers Kellz

Re: A pain in the Bum!

I suffered constipation with my second baby whilst pregnant. I ended up in hospital after straining caused a bleed at 30 weeks (be careful!) They recommended taking metamucil (tastes foul) each day and drinking more water and also eating more fibre and fruit.

Re: A pain in the Bum!

I was given lactolose after having Amy to help soften the stools so maybe I will try that!

Re: A pain in the Bum!

Hi Clare,

Most people get constipated while pregnant because of the changes in hormones. As a nutritionist i would say first to increase your fibre intake (fruit, veg, wholegrains, legumes), increase fluids and stay active (but nothing too strenuous!)

If you have tried these things, the next step would be a laxative that adds bulk, like metamucil or fybogel. Lactulose is considered safe during pregnancy, but i would still try the others first. Lastly, make sure you do not use any stimulant laxatives during pregnancy without consulting a doctor as these can cause contraction of the uterus.

Hope that helps :)
