how long is too long b4 one goes to the doctor regarding toddler diarrhea?
My son is 2 1/2 and has been having watery yellow stools now for two days. I am feeding him the BRAT (banans, rice, applesauce and toast), lots of fluids, and trying to hold off on the milk! He is not acting sick but ...so how long should I wait to see the MD?
Does your son chew on the washer in the bath? We have found that when our kids do, they tend to have sloppier nappies. It doesn't mean they are sick, just that they got more of the bath bugs than they probably should have. Means they don't get too many stomach bugs though! lol.
diahorrea isn't usually a concern if your child doesn't have a fever or is on the whole feeling themselves. Kids go through stages of it, and there isn't really much we as parents can do about it.
Obviously, if this is something that is happening for more than a couple of weeks at a time, and he is starting to lose weight or is starting to show signs of being unwell, then it is recommended that you get him seen by a doctor to rule out any of the nasties.
Not to be gross but does it smell REALLY REALLY bad...LOL It coudl be rotovirus. That causes yellow/green diarreah. You just have to let it run it's course. Unfortunetly it is hard to keep them hydrated. I would jsut push clear fluids and the BRAT diet until you see some improvement.
DS had rotovirus and it tooka bout 3 weeks for him to get back to full tilt. He has MAJOR GI issues though.
I agree with Kathryn below. As long as there is no signs of dehydration 3-4 days would be OK. If your child is holding the BRAT, I think he's doing pretty well. If it's any more than 4 days, it may be worth it to consult a doctor.
Hi! I just checked with the NHS Direct encylopaedia (worth bookmarking!) and wait until 3-4 days unless he gets dehydrated or has blood in it. If he is not acting ill, then let your mummy instincts guide you - he cant be all that bad. It's amazing how long they can live with it - my DD2 (22 months) had diarrhoea recently and started improving right on the 4 day mark, but hardly ate a thing for 2 weeks by her own choice. She had lots of my milk though!
