Re: Allergys

The doctor said he didn't want to test her for allergies because she is too young.  if the some one lifts the carpet or they cut a whole in the wall to find out where the water problem was and she gets sick.  runny nose up all night cause she cat breath and caughing.  She is on inhalers for it and thats all the doctor did.  So sensitivity to mold or allergic to it I am not sure.  They wouldn't test my son either until he is 4 they said for allergies to something outdoors they just put him on an inhaler and called it a day.

Re: Allergys

My pediatrician is the same. I've been mentioning to him that my son has seasonal allergies ever since he was 18 months old and he kept telling me that it's not a good idea to get him tested as he was so young and the test would not be reliable. So now he's 3 1/2 and still not tested. But that's OK as his allergies only causes some rash, itchy eyes, sneezing - all relatively minor. And recently, we've found that Claritin works!

But my 14 month old twin's situation is different. Every time they drank milk they had a rash, runny nose, welt. My pediatrician told me this was a minor and uncommon reaction and dismissed it. I brought it up again for the 2nd time on the next well baby visit and I asked for a specialist's name. So I took them to the specialist and sure enough found a very definite allergy to milk. It's a prick test (see photos here). Each resulting bump was measured. The pediatric allergist said that bumps/welts that are 4mm and smaller is not an accurate result at this young age so it is not considered true allergy. But 5mm and above is a true allergy. Well, my twins had welts for milk that are 9mm big. So they were definitely allergic.

Anyway, the moral is to listen to your guts. If you think the allergy is severe and worrisome, I would ask to be referred to a specialist. And if your baby is needing the inhaler often (one or twice a month at the very least), I would definitely go seek a 2nd opinion.

Re: Allergys

Then I say its time for a new doctor who will listen to you and get the allergy test done and quick..
You need to make sure it's the mold and not something else buggering her up.. Better to be safe than sorry..

Re: Allergys

has your daughter been tested for allergies? Because if your baby is allergic to mold, she may be allergic to other things. And if so, a doctor may be able to prescribe medication that may cover all.

My twins (now 14 months) just got tested for allergies a few weeks ago (skin prick test on the back) because we suspected they are allergic to milk. And in indeed they are, and they also reacted a little bit to peanut, and my one reacted to mold. But the reaction was so small, the pediatric allergist doesn't consider it to be accurate but we are now watching them. In the meantime they are on allergy medication and also gave me epi pen (they had a strong reaction to milk).

So, just a thought. Get tested and maybe medication can get it under control. Good luck to you.

Re: Allergys

Go and see your doctor and raise your concerns, my son is 3 and when he was baby i couldn't work out what i was doing wrong, my son has alleryies as well., especially when i would give him egg custard he would break out in this hot burning rash that would cover his whole body this rash would take 5 to 20 mins to appear being my first son i had no idea what the go was. My mother in law suggested me taking him to a nathpath so i did she put him on some stuff, that night i gave him egg custard and next minute he broke out in this rash i was blaming the stuff that i got from the nathpath and myself for taking him to a nathpath. So off to the dr and they put it down to eczema but i knew deep down that there was something else wrong, so i tried these creams and nothing would work. So off to the dr again told the dr that i thouhgt that my son couldn't eat eggs so she sent him for a allergy test, we got the results back (mind you he  had a blood test first then we had to travel to brisbane and get a skin prick testing done) results came back that he has allergies towards eggs, peanut and soybeans, and nut mix which consits of peanut, hazelnuts, brazil, alomonds and coconut aswell as house dust and crockroach. we still have trouble with his skin and i have to be careful in what he can and can't. His allergies are improving but he suffers alot from dry skin, can't use soap, and i;m always apply corstine cream to his body when his skin is quite bad. So the moral to this is go and so your dr and ask for a blood test and this will let  you know is she has allergies, if it comes back that she does your dr should send you for a skin prick allergy test.

Re: Allergys

Has it been confirmed as an allergy or is it just a sensitivity?  The reason I ask is because I have sensitivities to many things like pollens and molds.  I usually get an itchy rash and hayfever like symptoms for a few days but after about 3 days, my body has worked out how to deal with it.  That is, has built up an immunity.

We have a major mold problem in our bathroom, which our property manager has tried to have fixed but the owner has said no.  Ours is due to lack of ventilation in the bathroom, and we can't even open the windows as they have been permenantly locked on us.

Mold doesn't like the sun, so if you are able to open your home up so that it is flooded with good, natural sunlight, this will help to minimize the growth of the mold.  A good mold cleaning product will help too for when it starts growing on the walls etc.  Another thing you could try, if you are the home owner or your landlord allows, is to have the wet rooms of your house painted in a mold resistant paint.  This paint has a mould killing chemical in it that aids in preventing the growth of the mold spores.  It can be found at any hardware paint store, and while might cost more than regular paints, is an invenstment for the long term that will certainly save you money over time.

Regular cleaning of your carpets and furniture will help to eliminate mold spores as well.  I'm talking professional cleaning here.  Done every 6 months, it can really help to keep things clean and help with keeping the mold spore populations to a minimum.

There are special little bucket type things you should be able to get from your supermarket that take the humidity out of the air.  Putting one of these in the cupboards of your bathroom and other wet rooms will help to keep the mold from growing in the cupboards.  They don't just sap the moisture from the air, they also kill the mold spores that they trap.  The brand I have found are called Hippo Anti Humids, but I am in Australia and wouldn't know what is available around the world.

Re: Allergys

Depending on how bad the allergies are, Benadryl is usually very good for mild allergies...

I use it for my son who has an unknown allergy to something outside, that brings his face up in red blotches. And it works with in minutes....

Also at my day care there was a little boy with a very mild allergy to Peanuts, and his mother instructed us the first time we found out (as she forgot to mention it), to use benadryl.. Worked a charm..

But I am only assuming that it would depend on just how bad it is.. If it is mild itching or blotches it should be ok to use...  You could try and find a hot line to ask or just ask your local chemist....
