Sick kid - really need advice.

Please read the background and series of events this week.

Background..

My 18month old daugther goes to family daycare 4 days a week, great carer. I work those days, just started and setting up for a promotion. My Husabnd also works 5 days. My daugther Sam does a short day in care as my husabnd starts work very early to collect her mid arvo and I drop her off at 8am.

Events....

Friday past I noticed my girl's mood more fustrated than usual. Irritable and my mum was visiting us form Melbourne.

Saturday  - we all visit a softplay centre she is happy but short tempered.

Sunday - we go to the pools, no physical sign of illness in morning but she is extremely clingy and won't let me out of her sight, Afterwards I spray on a new childrens hair detangler......Later that day she looks like she is getting conjuctivitus and her eyes are weeping a little and it is yellowish I start rinsing them.

Monday -I have a leave day off she has a runny nose and itchy eyes...won't even let people near her....won't go down for nap and is furiously scratching her scalp and when I look I see her whole scalp is red, raised and irritated. I take her striagh down to doc they tell me it's an allergy to the hairspray and subscribe antihistermine. I go home anoyyed at myself and afterwards her she falls asleep becuase it makes her drowsy.

Tuesday - I wake in morning and when dressing her I see the rash has subided, So I get ready for work and drop her at care with the med in case it flairs. That night my husband says it flaired up in the arvo, so then I go check on her I undress her see and  it's completely covering both her legs same rash, red itchy rasied. That night she sleeps with me, she doesn't want anything touching her legs even blankets.

Wedneday - I wake to get ready for work - I undress her and see nothing on her legs, completely cleared up with no marks or trace(not using the antihistime anymore) but when I take off her singlet it has almost completely engulfed her chest and back. I call in sick to work and daycare and take her again to Doc, I see a different doc at the pratice - he tells me she has a virus and to comfort her  pain with panadol and cream for her rashes. She doesn't have a temp either. That night she vomits in our bed after coughing too much(a little strange)

Thursday - My husband stays off work (selfemployed). Sam had very yellow runny nose and is congested buyt without rash during day. When I get home I can see her in bed asleep. She is looking uncomfortable, she is sleeping light, is itchy with hot skin on her legs again that night and wakes about 10 time, once her eyes were sealed shut with goo. Still no temp so i just try to comfort her as doc's have suggested. She has droped her appitite.

Friday - I'm home with her, she is ok during the day no rashes or temp just a cold like syptoms so things look up but later that day she starts going down hill around 5, her rashs have appeared (often after heat or crying) I her nose is very blocked and she only breaths through her mouth, I notice blood in one nostril, I stay up to monitor her, at one stage I wake her to drink water becuase she looks very pale and her breath is odd and lips dry. ( I consider going to hospital but I know thw wait is always hours) She has a cough now and seams dazed(could be sleepy though). Her eyes are still bad and I wipe hem over.

Today  -  She wakes furious and crying. I take her again to another doctor, he tells me (without tests) she has a virus (accounting the rashs and cold syptoms) but now also bacteria infection (nose, snot and breathing troubles) also a possible chest infection ( will xray Monday) and a ear infection.

Tonight she is on anibiotics, panadol, two nose srays and antihistime. She seams more comfortable and I pray it starts to kill of the infections tomorrow.

I'm feeling sick about next week becuase I just returned to work force and got a great job, been there for three months and offered promotion and this week is the first week in that new role, I know thats life and of course my baby is most important of all but the situation really stresses me out.

Please offer advice on any of these questions.

Who do you take your kids too, a GP or Ped? where do you get better results?

Do you know how I can help comfort her in illness? Tricks? ideas?

Has anyone had a migrating itchy rash appear on there kids, what is it?

If antibiotic is treating the bacteris infection, what is treating the  virus, I've heard antibiotics when used on this combination and increase ear pain and prevent it working on batercia. Do you know if this is true?

Any advice - similar stories - good ideas is appriciated...

Xo

Re: Sick kid - really need advice.

with kids it could be anything but sending them to daycare raises the likleness of them getting something.my son had a rash and had the docs stumped and they just put it down to a virus and they did nothing and it disapeared in a week.and i prefer to go to my local chemist for advise first try the natural remidies first or my child health nurse rather than the doc they really make you feel like an paranoid mother and makes you feel bad.but always if he has fever (over 37.2) that's when you go to doc.

Re: Sick kid - really need advice.

The rash certainly sounds like an allergy response to me, made worse by the cooler, drier conditions of winter (I checked your profile and you are in Australia, so am I ).  I think that the allergin is more likely to be at the daycare centre.

With her breathing, are you able to get a steam vapouriser?  we bought one after I ended up in hospital with respiratory distress from a flu bug and it has helped my whole family immensly (even hubby's snoring!).  It works by putting humidity back in the air, which is good for her breathing and her skin too.  This allows for the airways to be lubricated better so makes breahting easier.

There have been many cold and flu bugs going around this year, and none of them have been the same.  The only thing that is the same for us, is the post viral cough which can hang around for several weeks.

Re: Sick kid - really need advice.

I know it is a long wait at a hospital, but I think it is the best place for your daughter to be totally checked and she will most likely get seen by a paediatrician, who specialise in children.

I wish you & her the very best.

Hi, I think I would definelty take her to the hospital is she does not improve. You cannot see a pedaetrician without firslty seeing a GP - and the wait can be a couple of weeks to get in. I had a similiar problem with my daugher about 18 months ago when she was 18 months! She had a mild pneaumonia for which a GP prescribed antibiotics , but she had an  allergic reaction to the anitbiotic  - but the GP didn't detect this and thought that it wasn't working so hence prescribed an even stronger dose of the same medication!!!! She ended up with 'target lesions' and overnight in hospital. The paediatrician could not believe that the GP prescribed a stronger medication before first even checking that she still needed antibiotics (the pneumonia had long gone!!!)  Anyway, perhaps your rash is an allergic reaction to some medication and not hte hairspray??

I know how stressful it can be when kids are sick and you have the pressure of work as well..... I suggest going to the hospital - it will be a long wait but at least she will get superior treatment.

Re: Sick kid - really need advice.

I'm sorry that i wont be of much help but antibiotics will not treat a virus.  If she has a virus it will have to 'work' it's way out of the body in it's own time.  If it was me and i was that worried about her i would go to the A&E, i know it is a long wait but just to be sure.  Sorry i cannot offer anything more.  I hope she is ok.
