Bad Reaction to Tomatoes?

My 18 month old tried tomatoes on Sunday..Loved them of course lol..However, she developed a little rash on her chest..I am not sure the two are realated as she's never had any sort of reaction to food before..The rash doesn't bother her in any way..

I am just trying to put two and two together..Has your child had this reaction before to food?

Re: Bad Reaction to Tomatoes?

You would probably have to experiment to find out - if the rash went away within a few hours but then came back the next time your child ate tomato, it might be an intolerance or allergy.  However I believe (but don't quote me!) that with allergies babies are more likely to get a skin reaction around the mouth rather than on the chest.

It might just be a coincidence that your baby had a rash for some other reason (viral rashes are very common) and you noticed it the same day your child first ate tomatoes.

you will find red rash around the mouth from foods that are acidic like tomatoes. Sometimes you'll find this to be a contact reaction only though. Some kids that may get a rash when eating raw tomatoes will not if you feed them spaghetti with tomato sauce.

My son had the same reaction when he was younger, but no longer.

Re: Bad Reaction to Tomatoes?

Thanks for that Izzy - I've noticed that with pineapple and a couple of other things but never worked out that's what it was!  My  hubby can't eat tomatoes - I don't know if it is an allergy or intolerance and now my kids won't eat it and I wonder if they have the same reaction or if they are just copying Dad.  There are a lot of foods that are highly allergic even in fruits and veges - and I find Royston won't eat them - like strawberries, avocado, kiwi fruit etc....  again whether just a personal choice or his intuition I'm not sure.  He also won't eat eggs any more either.
