teenagers possessions destroyed by angry parent?

I need to know, and have searched the net without much sucess if my child 13 years old has any rights regarding her possessions.

She lived with her father until a fortnight ago, and most of her stuff is gone, supposedly put into the garbage bins, her clothes, school books, uniforms not to mention precious items she owned. I dont know what to do ( as her mother) ... needless to say its rather a long story but dont wish to print here, Is her father not liable at all for the destruction of her property, or is he allowed to get away with it as gher former guardian and father??  Some of the items I can replace, but some never can be, she has only a few items of clothing left .... and surely there must be rights for children.

Any help plz  Pito

Aww, what a terrible thing to happen to a child. The only thing I can think of that would help would be if she file a police report. This is the only way the destruction of her property will be documented and the only way her dad can be made responsible for what happened.

i wish you and her the best

Re: teenagers possessions destroyed by angry parent?

I have very little knowledge about a child's legal rights regarding property, but I've found a webpage for you that might be of some help.

It has a search data base where you can find a lawyer in your area.  You enter in family law and then the state you are in, and it will help to match you to a law specialist in your area.

At the moment, Google seems to have screwed up their search engine and most of the stuff it is giving me for my searches is completely off the topic of what I look for, so this is the first page I found that is of use.

I really hope that this gets sorted out soon, and that your daughter can get some nice new things.  Make sure when you speak with the lawyer, you start making arrangements about restricting her father's access to her.

your child has many rights regarding her property. all she has to do is report him to welfare for failing to provide for her.

you also can have him charged with destruction of property and failing to provide correct care for a child.

sit down with you family law provider and find out what you can do to make him replace her property.

hope this helps and good luck.

I honestly have no idea, but I would assume that it is different in different areas/countries.  Do you have a welfare advice service of some kind that you can talk to?  Here in the UK it is called 'Citizen's Advice' and if they cannot give you a direct answer they can usually advise you where to go to next to get real answers.

To be honest I would be tempted to ask my solicitor at the local family law firm.  This sounds like a terrible situation to be in.  I know what those few precious possessions are like to own - I still have mine from when I was a child and we first moved to the UK and when I thought I had lost a box of them when we moved a few years back - well the relief was enormous when we found that box!

Good luck, fingers crossed for you
