more food questions from bad cook.

well i last asked the questions of what to cook up for my 9 month old and i got a GREAT reply, so thank you all. Now i was wondering about canned fruit. I couldnt stand looking at the fresh fruit prices at the shops today so i had a looked at the canned. I went for the top quailty and tried peaches in juice for my nine month old. SHe loved it but im worried about it being canned and not fresh. I havnt seen any of the mags saying not to, either have i seen them saying "give it a go"

SO just asking minti users what they think of canned fruit and if they give it to there children. Keep in mind she always has fresh atleast once a day.

Re: more food questions from bad cook.

I think canned fruit is fine, especially if she is still getting fresh fruit..I do this for my dd, but she is 18 months!!

My only advice is to make sure that when you purchase the canned fruit, to make sure is is the kind in juice and not heavy syrup which is very very sugary!!

Good luck

canned fruit yes of course by all means give it your baby as long as it's in natural juice not the syrup

Re: more food questions from bad cook.

I hated fresh fruit not the taste the waste it drove me rd the twist going off, some one told me to try making fruit salads adding a squeeze of lemon juice it still ment a whole lotta money down the drain, then i looked around and found frozen fruit it's chopped washed and frozen usually for smoothies but its much more practicle every night choose a few cubes or slices of what your baby's having the next day in the fridge over night and its rdy theres nothing added no juices with added sugar just frozen so its almost fresh on demand all week long.

Re: more food questions from bad cook.

Canned fruit can be high in sugar and low in nutrients so if you can help it try not to rely on it too much.  Fresh fruit is best try bananas they are nice and soft and young ones like the mess they make, lol.  Pears are soft as well when they are ripe and so are strawberries, nectarines, peaches and grapes.  Be careful with hard fruit as they can choke (well mine did, lol). If you're worried about the cost try a piece of fruit at a time that way if baby doesn't like it you won't have wasted a lot of money. Good luck.

Re: more food questions from bad cook.

i dont see a major prob with givin kids canned fruit as an occasional substitute.

alot of fruits are seasonal and therefore hard to get or the quality of the fruit isnt great, canned does loose some nutrients in the heating process but its still good compared to fruit thats not all that fresh anyway or damaged or bruised, check the amount of sugar added to some of them though some contain alot of sugar specially the surupy ones.....

Re: more food questions from bad cook.

I've given it to my kids from a young age - but not as a sole source of fruit.  I thought they were still fairly high in nutrients, as I know Weight Watchers still recommend tinned & frozen fruit/veg as a viable option. Dunno. Sorry I can't help more...
