Not Eating

Ok well Damian has been sick for nearly 3 weeks on and off and refused to eat any solids the whole time but now he is better, he still refusing to eat anything that isn't Pureed or mashed.

Before he got sick he was teething and loved chewy foods, I am just wondering if there is a way to try and get him chewing again??

Also this is a concern I have is that he hasnt put on any weight in 4 1/2 months since he turned 1 is this normal??

I am taking him to the dr's next week to get advice but just thought I would ask on here to see if my worries are normal or not

Re: Not Eating

is he himself?is he as active as usual? has he got normal pooy and wet nappies?it's normal for kids to plateau at this age as they are so busy and prefer to be playing than eating (it boring for them!!!)they will only eat what and when they feel like.no need to force feed them as this will only discourage them from eating all the more.if he doesn't want it leave it at that offer it to  him later. if he's not himself then off to the doc.i'm going through a similar thing with my son but has become lethargic (yes we off to doc tomorrow!)

Re: Not Eating

at least 3-4 good wet nappies a day?this is a good sign that he's getting all his body needs. but of course you are the mummy and if your concerns grow go see doc.has he actually lost weight or has he had a growth spurt and thinned meaning has he grown length wise?this you need to monitor also!!.he will eat when he feels.try getting him to chew on his tooth brush or a rough wet flannel, this arrouses the senses in the mouth to get ready for food.my daughter has hypersensitivity and didn't let anything go anywhere  near her mouth and this helped good luck

Re: Not Eating

I totally agree with what the others have had to say.  My son went through a phase of not eating and it stressed me to the max.

My mothers best advice was kids will not starve themselves.  If they are not hungry or just don't wont it don't force them.  In time he will eat.

What we found especially with dinner was that he was having to much to eat at arvo tea time and having it too late now we give arvo tea no later than 3pm and dinner is about 5.30 - 6.00pm

I guess the answer is to try not to stress and just offer different things.  See what the Doc has to say.   If the weight loss is not too dramatic then it should be ok.   Just wait to see what the Doc has to say.

By the sounds of it you are doing a good job.   It just takes time.  Very fustrating I know!

Re: Not Eating

Naomi has given you some excellent advice here. Your doing the right thing by taking him  Damian to the doctors better to be safe than sorry, even if it is just to put your own mind at rest.

I'm sure it is only a phase he is going through....just persevere in trying different foods maybe some mashed and some a bit more solid.

As far as the weight, he is most likely more active now which will is quiet normal and usually weight gain slows down......or this is what I found with my children & they also went through phases of putting on weight and then not.

All the best at the doctors.

Cheers Janice

Re: Not Eating

Myah has done exactly the same. As i was giving advice, a child will never starve themselves. He is just going through a phase and will grow out of it,takes time beleive me!! Myah is still going through it!! If you stress about it he will know and will keep playing on it. Just keep trying with things that he loved and try some new things like sticks of cheese, fruit sticks, fingers of toast with avocado, fingers of pear...with fruit you could show him how to dip it in yogurt. I have been doing that with Myah and she loves dipping things. She is loving fish fillets cut up in to little pieces and using her little fork and dipping it in some cheese spread or sauce. I have been trying really hard to do different things with her nearly everyday, its tiring but its just all trial and error. Hope i helped in some way...ohh with the weight thing, he was sick so he wouldnt have eaten well, that would be one reason why the weight hasnt gone up but they do slow down with their weight after 1yr old. Myah has put on half a kg in 3 mths...but she isnt loosing and i was told by my dr not too worry unless they loose. He is more active now which also contributes to this...goodluck sweetie...
