How to start toilet training??

Hi, my son is 2yrs 2months and i just wanted some ideas on how you start toilet training?? He always comes to the toilet with me or dad and likes to flush the toilet for us and even sometimes he wants to sit on the toilet but only for a second and i never take his nappy off for that. I bought a wee-man from an expo - should i start with that or just using the potty or just put him on toilet?? I heard that you have to put them in underpants and take them to loo every 2 hours is this a good start??

ta lisa

Re: How to start toilet training??

It is not very difficult but it can get time consuming. I am on a sabbatical so i have the time for Rishan. He is 8 months old and needs to be taken to the loo in the following cases: I use a simple ergonomically designed potty for him

1. Every time i change sides during breastfeeds, at least thrice during a 30 mins external feed

2. Every time he wakes up during his sleep cycle.

3. Every 30 mins on an average. While he is playing.

I have only noticed these things with Rishan, so u could probably take small tips on how best to resolve this issue. He doesn't pass urine or stool while he is being carried in arms. Puts both his fists into his mouth to indicate urge to pass urine. Makes grumpy noises to pass stool. I pick him up at just that time onto the potty.

Imp:

Sometimes, it so happens that he may not pass and may pull backwards. Please don't force him to at this time, instead try again later.

Try using one of the above techniques at least once a day, so that ur baby begins to associate ur intentions

Talk to ur baby, Convey ur intentions. they understand a lot more than we can even think

Sometimes he might not like the potty, take him to the wash basin instead.

Happy Parenting.

Re: How to start toilet training??

If your son is ready, putting him in undewear and making him go every 2 hours is a very good start. My son's preschool did exactly that. The teacher had regular potty breaks for those kids that were ready.  The teacher made the kids sit there for a few minutes even if they say they don't need to go.  This is what I did with my son at home too.  You can even try doing it every hour too to start with or if you find that there are accidents.

Re: How to start toilet training??

I found it easier to tolilet train my son when he was starting a bowel movement by first just sitting him on his potty he was about 18 months old...he soon got the hang of it  when he wanted to go to the toilet he would point to his potty both for wee's and bowels....this took a good 4 months of patience.

When he was about 2 & 1/2 I bought a stool to go in front of the big toilet and one of those toilet extensions you put in the big toilet and we slowly progressed to get him onto that with a lot of encouragement because I feel they are scared of things that are much bigger than them.

I wish you well.

Regards Janice
